Day 6 – Grade

4 - Science
Performance Indicator: 4.E.2.A.2: Develop and use models to
explain how water changes as it moves between the atmosphere and
Earth’s surface during each phase of the water cycle (including
evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and runoff).

Essential Question(s):
How does water change as it moves between the Earth and the atmosphere?
What are the causes of these changes?
What are the different processes in the water cycle?
What are the effects of these changes in water?

I-Can Statements: .
• I can explain how water moves between the Earth and the atmosphere.
• I can illustrate my understanding through models.
• I can identify and explain the four processes within the water cycle.
• I can describe the effects between the water cycle and weather.
2
Engage Activity
Answer the following question after reading the scenario:
It just rained yesterday and Ms. Seawright said you and your peers
can go to recess. You notice that there is a puddle at the bottom of
the slide. No one touches it. The next day you noticed the puddle has
gotten a little smaller. The day after that the puddle is even smaller.
What do you think is happening with the puddle?

3
Exploration Time
Water Cycle the movement of water between Earth’s surface and atmosphere. Water moves
from the oceans and land into air and back again.

Evaporation The suns energy makes some of the liquid water change into gas. (The change from
a liquid to a gas)

Condensation As water vapor rises, it cools off. When it gets cool enough, water vapor changes
back to liquid water. (The change from a gas to liquid)

Precipitation Droplets of liquid water in clouds combine with other droplets to form bigger
drips. When they become too big and heavy, they fall back to Earth’s surface as rain, hail, sleet
or snow.

Runoff Water falls into the oceans and onto land. On land, some water sinks into the ground,
and some flows downhill over the ground. Water that flows over the ground is called run off.
4
Exploration Time Water changes as it moves from the Earth into
Water, which is found almost the atmosphere and back to Earth again. This
process is called the water cycle. The Sun is
everywhere on Earth, moves
key to the water cycle. The causes of
between the Earth and its evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and
atmosphere. This cycle (water runoff.
cycle) is driven by the sun and
influences weather
conditions.

Big Ideas
Models can represent the
movement of the water
between the Earth and the The four types of precipitation. The
atmosphere. effects of the water cycle on
weather, specifically humidity.

You are about to watch a video that talks about the Exploration Time
water cycle.
While you are watching, write down 1 fact you heard
from the video. Make sure you listen carefully, you do
not want your information to be incorrect.

Quick write Time
Directions: Read the following prompt
below. You will take about 5 to 7
minutes to use a sheet of notebook
paper to answer the prompt with in one
paragraph. Keep in mind that 4th
graders need to write at least 7 to 9
COMPLETE sentences for this quick
write activity. Good Luck!

Prompt:
What would life be like without any form of precipitation?
7
Exploration Time
Activity: Construct a One Pager:
-Directions: Students must include important vocabulary such as water
cycle, evaporation, condensation, precipitation and run off on the one
pager. Students need to include pictures and at least five facts they can
recall from our water cycle unit. Make sure it is relevant to the water
cycle. Include a border and information related to water cycle

Develop three questions on the back of your one pager to ask your peers
about the water cycle when you return.
