Review of the history of hotel
industry in China
1. Since the Open Door Policy in late 1970s
and Early 1980s
• Deng Xiaoping was credited as the leader
who initiated the change of policies
regarding travel and tourism in China
•Star-rated hotels (the luxury ones)→ located
in a number of the major cities with a
narrow market focus
Review of the history of hotel
industry in China
2. In late 1980s and 1990s
•The emergence of Sino-foreign joint-venture hotels
e.g. Jianguo Hotel and White Swan Hotel
•Encouragement of learning advanced international hotel management methods
•Receiving policy support from the local governments
•The China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) issued the star-rating standards
for tourist hotels →promoted the development of star-rated hotels
•Achieving a higher degree of facility and service standardization
Review of the history of hotel
industry in China
3. After the entry of China into the World Trade Organisation in 2001
•Policy Support in terms of taxation, pricing and human resources created
further opportunities for hotel development→ the foreign and joint-venture
ones
• Great improvement of hotel infrastructure and service

bringing China’s hotel industry in line with international standards

Examples
1. Cooperation between international brands and
fast-growing domestic hotel groups
•The international brands can make full use of the local
advantages provided by domestic hotel groups
•The local brands can accumulate management expertise
from international brands

•InterContinental Hotels Group→ The Opening of the

‘Holiday Inn Express’ franchising model in China in 2016
→ further expand its franchising business model with
three major brands: Crowne Plaza Hotels and Resorts, InterContinental in Hangzhou
Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Resort in 2017
Hotel +
•Cross sector expansion strategies
•Collaboration with other industry sectors to
develop innovative hotel-related business

•Muji Hotel has adopted its popular designing style

into its hotel products and services
→The hotel has become a new ‘online celebrity’
photographic scene for young customers

Spatial analysis of
hotels in China
•The cluster of star-rated hotel located in the
Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and
Beijing-Tianjian region
•Areas of high levels of economic condition,
foreign investment and tourism development
Spatial analysis of hotels in Hong
Kong
1. There is continuous development in the central business district (CBD)
• Shopping and business facilities play important roles in determining the location of upper-
grade hotel, rather than natural and cultural attractions
•Due to the resources constraint policies in Hong Kong
2. There is no difference between lower-grade and upper-grade hotels in terms
of traffic accessibility
•Hong Kong has highly convenient transport facilities giving each hotel access to potential
tourism markets without needing extra accessibility
→Traffic accessibility may not be an important consideration
