a. Why did the caravan travel at night?

During the day the sun shone steadily, making the sand so hot that no one could

walk upon but at night both men and camels could travel easily. So caravans

travelled at night.

b. What did the pilot use to guide the caravan through the journey?

The pilot used the stars to guide the caravan through the journey.

c. How did the pilot come to know about the oasis?

The camels could smell the grass and water. They raised their heads, stretched their

nostrils, and hastened eagerly forward, thus he pilot came to know about the oasis.

d. Why did they throw away the firewood and water?

They threw away the firewood and the water as their destination was nearing and

this would lighten the burden of the camels.

e. How did Abdul know that there was water nearby?

Abdul knew there was water nearby as he saw a tuft of grass. This indicated that

there was water somewhere under the grass.


f. How would you describe Abdul?

Abdul was smart merchant. He was observant and knew the tricks of the trade. He

was a risk-taker as when they were lost in the deserts and did not have wood or

water, he went out in search of water for his caravan.

g. What do Abdul’s actions teach us?

Abdul’s action teaches us that we should not lose hope and always look for solutions

rather that sulking and losing hope.
