Comparison of large numbers

 

This chapter deals with the place value, representation of numbers up to 99 lakhs in Indian
system and up to 9 million  in International system and comparison of large numbers

As the chapter continues, student's will be able to identify the place value of numbers and writing
numbers in standard form..

Solved Example:

a) 2,13,450

= 2 lakhs+10 thousands+3 thousands+4 hundreds+5 tens+0 one

 =  2,00,000+10,000+3000+400+50

b) 91134

= 90,000+1000+100+20+7
c) 3,00,000+20,000+4,000+400+4=3,24,404

d) Write the place value of the underlined digits in each of the numbers.

23456 ; 34562; 10987; 30982

=3000+2+0+30000=33002

e) Convert the place values:

i) 7 hundreds=   700 ones.

ii) 4 thousands= 40 hundreds

Representing numbers in Indian System

The number 7964328 is separated by comma from the ones place to the highest place by
counting 3, 2, 2, 2 digits from right to the left i.e. after hundreds place, after ten thousands place
and after ten lakhs place (from right to left).

79,64,328 = Seventy nine lakh, sixty four thousand, three hundred and twenty eight

Expanded form:

79,64,328 = 70,00,000 + 9,00,000 + 60,000 + 4,000 + 300 + 20 + 8

Place value and Face value:

The place value of 9 in 79,64,328 is 9 lakhs or 9,00,000.

The face value of 9 in 79,64,328 is 9 only.

The place value of 4 in 79,64,328 is 4 thousand or 4000.

The face value of 4 in 79,64,328 is 4 only.

International Place Value Chart:

Representing numbers in International System

The number 8653679 is separated by comma from the ones place to the highest place by
counting every 3 digits from the right i.e. after hundreds place, after hundred thousands(from
right to left).

8,653,679 = Eight million, six hundred and fifty three thousand, six hundred and eighty nine.

Expanded form:

8,653,679 = 8,000,000 + 600,000 + 50,000 + 3,000 + 600 + 70 + 9

Indian and International number system

Place value and Face value:

The place value of 8 in 8,653,679 is 8 millions or 8,000,000.

The face value of 8 in 8,653,679 is 8.

The place value of 5 in 8,653,679 is 50 thousands or 50,000.

The face value of 5 in 8,653,679 is 5.

1 million in International place value system is equal to 10 lakhs in Indian place value system.
1 Million or 1,000,000 = 10 Lakhs or 10,00,000

Comparison of numbers:

Compare the digits from left to right in order to compare and arrange the numbers. Understand
the terms predecessor and successor in arranging numbers.

e.g., Predecessor of 2,31,478  is 2,31,477. Thus subtract 1 to find the predecessor of a number.

        Successor of 6,00,123  is 6,00,124. Thus add 1 to find the successor of a number.

As man progressed the need

to represent larger circle of things around him grew. Different places developed their own
way of representing numbers which lead to confusion and thus uniformity in number system
was important to be initiated. Thus the common number system used across the world is the
International number system. The more common number system used in our country is the
Indian Number system. This chapter deals with the place value, representation of numbers up
to 99 lakhs in Indian system and up to 9 million in International system and comparison of
large numbers.

Arrange the following tickets  in ascending order.

b) Write the following numbers in expanded form.

Length of Tapti river is about 7,24,000m

Population of Pune in 2018 was  about 3120000 lakhs

Write the following in figures.
