“The Honorable David P. Pekoske
Administrator
Transportation Security Administration
601 South 12* Street—Fast Building
Arlington, VA 20598

Dear Administrator Pekoske:

At our meeting last week, I asked about the TSA contingency plan in caseof staffing shortages
due to call outs and bumout. Your response was that there is no official contingency plan, but
that TSA would continue to monitor the situation.

On Saturday, May 14, due to a shortageof TSAstaff after call outs and a clear lack of
contingency staffing plans, four lanes had to be closed during the morning peak. The wait time
‘was 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, andonceagain passenger security lines snaked outside the
terminal. Many passengers missedtheirflights.
On Tuesday, May 17, passengers were again lined up outside the terminal due to yet another
shortage ofofficers after some called out in the moming. This continual overall lack of sufficient
staffing and, in particular, continued lack of planningtoensure staffing covers sick and personal
time off, is unacceptable.
On Saturday and Tuesday, when lines were forced outside the Airport doors, AUS processed
24,000 passengers.
A week and ahalf from now, AUS expects a 50% increase in passengerload —36,000
passengers—and, even with the additional 11 TSA officers due to arrive, is thoroughly
unprepared for the anticipated all-day every day peak times as AUS must process those
‘additional passengers.
‘What steps is TSA taking to address this untenable situation? What we need most, as both the
Airport Director and I have urged, is more TSA officers, but I believe you also need a specific
contingency plan that may require treating passengers for heat strokeifsubstantialreliefis not
promptly provided.
