Module 2: PHILIPPINE TOURISM INDUSTRY

local government unit in the tourism industry

Tourism Industry Sectors and Organizations

Government Sector
Local Government Units (LGU)
Divided into 4 levels:
 Autonomous regions
 Provinces and cities independent from a province
 Component cities and municipalities, and
 Barangays

Tourism Bill of 2004 (Senate Bill 1725)


 Introduced by Sen. Richard Gordon during 13th Congress.
 Highlights tourism as the centerpiece of the Philippine economy
 Features the reorganization of the Department of Tourism into 4 groups: department
proper, department services, bureaus and offices, and department’s regional offices

Department of Tourism
Created in 1973 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 189
Tourism Act of 2009 or Republic Act No. 9593 declared the country’s tourism policy as a
driving force in generating investment, employment and national development

Tourism Act of 2009 consists of:


1. DOT Proper
2. Office of Tourism Standards and Regulations
3. Office of Tourism Coordination

Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC)


 Involved in the planning and implementation of the country’s tourism marketing efforts
 Now known as Tourism Promotions Board (TPB)
 An attached agency of the Department of Tourism, the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) exists to
market and promote the Philippines domestically and internationally as a world-class tourism and
MICE destination, in strategic partnership with private and public stakeholders to deliver a unique
high-value experience for visitors, significantly contributing to increased arrivals, receipts and
investments to the country.

 Mission
We creatively market and promote a unique and high value experience for the visitors.
 Vision
Country: Philippines is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Asia Pacific by 2022.

Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA)


 Tasked to execute the established policies and programs of the department particularly for the
 development, promotion and supervision of tourism projects in the Philippines
 Now known as Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA)
 The Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), a government corporation, was
created by virtue of Republic Act No. 9593 or the Tourism Act of 2009 on May 12, 2009, replacing the
Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA). TIEZA is mandated to continue the functions previously exercised
by PTA under Presidential Declaration 564, unless otherwise inconsistent with the provisions of RA
9593.

 Vision
By 2026, TIEZA is a globally recognized tourism development agency and a primary catalyst for
inclusive and sustainable socio-economic growth.
 Mission
To contribute to national tourism development goals and showcase Philippine culture by
designating, supervising, and regulating sustainable Tourism Enterprise Zones; undertaking viable
Tourism Infrastructure Projects; and managing assets.
