At the end of specimen failure may occur due to stress induced by gripping device. These stresses
do not affect central position usually of smaller cross section than end position or shoulders.

For brittle material, ends should be larger sufficient to avoid failure due to axial gripping stress
joining area of end position & central position should have adequate fillet. This reduces stress
concentration resulting from abrupt changes in the cross section specimen should be symmetrical
to avoid bending during loading.
