1. A square plate having one of its side equal to 3m is immerse in a water surface in a
vertical position such that the two edges of the square would be horizontal in order that

2. A dam is triangular in cross section with the upstream vertical. The water surface
elevation is also at the top of the dam. The dam is 8m high and 6m wide at the bottom.
The coefficient of friction between the base and the foundation is 0.80. Hydrostatic
uplift varies from full at the heel to zero at the toe. (= 23.5 kN/m³)

a. Determine the factor of safety against overturning. (5 pts.)


b. Determine the factor of safety against sliding. (5 pts.)
c. Determine the stress at toe. (5 pts.)

3. A wooden buoy (sg=0.62) is 50mm x 50mm by 3m long is made to float in sea water
(sg=1.025). How many N of steel (sg= 8.75) should be attached to the bottom to make
the buoy float with exactly 450mm exposed above the water surface? (10 pts.)
