According to Einar Haugen
(1956), it is “when a bilingual
introduces a completely
unassimilated word from another
language into his speech.”
Carol Myers-Scotton (1993)
defined it by saying that code
switching “is the selection by
bilingual or multilinguals of
forms of an embedded variety
(varieties) in utterances… during
the same conversation.”
Eyamba Bokamba (1989)
distinguishes code switching as
the “mixing of words, phrases
and sentences from two distinct
grammatical systems across
sentence boundaries with the
same speech event.”
Eyamba Bokamba
(1989) defined code-mixing
“is the embedding of various
linguistic units such as affixes
(bound morphemes), words
(free morphemes), phrases and
clauses from cooperative
activity where the participants,
in order to infer what is
intended, must reconcile what
they hear and what they
understand.”
It is a situation in
which a community uses two
different languages or varieties
of languages for different
situations. The common
language is the colloquial, or
the “low” variety. A second,
“high” variety is used in
formal circumstances: It is
taught in school and assumes
administrative, legal, religious,
and literary functions.
