Testing of coatings:

The floor coating industry has not seen advancements in the methods of
testing for the DFT as it has for the WFT. The protective coating industry
has numerous testing gauges and advanced equipments for testing of DFT.
However the test methods are not nearly zero when it comes to floor
coatings. They maybe classified into two:
i. Destructive testing: Core cutting, Hatching.
ii. Non-destructive testing:
a. Ultrasonic meter.
b. Consumption tallying.

i. Core cutting:
Core cutting is a process of drilling circular and precise into a structure.
These holes are created for placements of pipes, wires, etc. There is no
intention of core cutting to measure the DFT of a coating. However on
obtaining the cross sections the DFT is measurable. Given below is a
picture of core cutting.

ii. Non-destructive testing:

a. Ultrasonic meter

An ultrasonic DFT meter works on the principle of Ultrasonic wave transmission.

They use and ultrasonic sound pulse to determine the thickness of coating.
Sometimes the ultrasonic signal can be deflected by substrate or coating
undulations and as a result the readings are not obtained immediately. Moving the
gauge around with the presence of a couplant on surface may help in getting the
reading.

Advantages

• Non-destructive technique
• Does not require access to both sides of the sample
• Can be engineered to cope with coatings, linings, etc.
• Good accuracy (0.1 mm and less) can be achieved using standard timing
techniques

• Can be easily deployed, does not require laboratory conditions

• Relatively cheap equipment
• No need to remove the coating of the metal.

Disadvantages

• Usually requires calibration for each material

• Requires good contact with the material
• Requires coupling material between the measured surface and the probe.
• Sometimes the ultrasonic signal can be deflected by substrate or coating
undulations and as a result the readings are not obtained immediately.

The accuracy of the reading is indicated by the signal strength indicator. The signal
indicator ranges from red to green.

b. Consumption Tallying
Every manufacturer has a set standard of material consumption for
achieving required thickness. This consumption plays an important
role in ensuring that the required thickness if given by the applicator
or no.
Eg: For MYK Materials as per the Technical details.

Description Consumption DFT in mm

2
Primer 0.1 Kg/m N.A.
2
Screed 1.6 Kg/m 1mm
2
Top Coat 1.4 Kg/m 1mm
Scratch coat Not to be counted in system thickness

DO’S & DON’T’S:

1. Do not drop pointed or heavy objects absurdly on the floor.

2. Avoid outdoor shoes if possible. Use separate indoor shoes to prevent
dust and gravel accumulation in the shop floor.
3. Avoid spillage of strong acids and high temperature liquids.
4. Never allow welding or fabrication on an Epoxy floor as the sparks will
damage the top skin.
5. Do not drag anything on the floor.
6. Follow cleaning guidelines.
7. Cleaning the burr on the trolley wheels daily.
