Testing of coatings:
The floor coating industry has not seen advancements in the methods of
testing for the DFT as it has for the WFT. The protective coating industry
has numerous testing gauges and advanced equipments for testing of DFT.
However the test methods are not nearly zero when it comes to floor
coatings. They maybe classified into two:
i. Destructive testing: Core cutting, Hatching.
ii. Non-destructive testing:
a. Ultrasonic meter.
b. Consumption tallying.
i. Core cutting:
Core cutting is a process of drilling circular and precise into a structure.
These holes are created for placements of pipes, wires, etc. There is no
intention of core cutting to measure the DFT of a coating. However on
obtaining the cross sections the DFT is measurable. Given below is a
picture of core cutting.
Advantages
• Non-destructive technique
• Does not require access to both sides of the sample
• Can be engineered to cope with coatings, linings, etc.
• Good accuracy (0.1 mm and less) can be achieved using standard timing
techniques
Disadvantages
The accuracy of the reading is indicated by the signal strength indicator. The signal
indicator ranges from red to green.
b. Consumption Tallying
Every manufacturer has a set standard of material consumption for
achieving required thickness. This consumption plays an important
role in ensuring that the required thickness if given by the applicator
or no.
Eg: For MYK Materials as per the Technical details.
