Mechanism of Material Removal in AJM
In the case of brittle materials, material is removed by erosion process, particle impact
produces different types of cracks and chipping due to brittle fracture, with negligible
plastic deformation.
An increase in the value of ‘M’ increases MRRv but a larger value of ‘M’ may decrease jet
velocity and sometimes may block the nozzle
• Intricate details in hard and brittle material makes up for low MRR

Abrasive Jet Machining: Advantages
• Ability to machine heat sensitive, brittle and fragile materials with thin sections which are
• Very little or no heat generation due to non-contact cutting and microscopic material
removal

Abrasive Jet Machining: Disadvantages
• Not good to machine soft and ductile materials due to lower MRR. Restricted for brittle
materials
• Additional cleaning operation is required to machined part as particles can imbed into
workpiece

Abrasive Jet Machining: Applications
• Cutting brittle material (glass, ceramic)
• Paint removal
• Cutting frozen meat
• Removing flash and parting lines from injection
molded parts
• Drilling
• Milling
• Cutting metallic mould cavities inaccessible
with conventional processes
• Trimming of electronic devices
• Deburring and polishing plastic, polymers, etc.
• Permanent marking on rubber stencils
