I. ShapeUp Your Mind

1. Give two characteristics of the nature of science? Discuss it. Write in at least 2
paragraphs.

Understanding natural phenomena is one of the characteristics of nature of science. As we lived

here on Earth scientist never stop researching and finding evidences that will explain natural phenomena
like volcanic eruption, thunderstorms, LPA’s, lunar and solar eclipse, tornados, hurricanes and so many
more that we don’t really know the reason why it happens until researchers explained it to us. They look
for evidences that will explain how it happens so that we can prevent possible damages to humans.
Because of this characteristic of natural science we discovered apparatus that can help us deal with those
phenomena. Through experimentation and observation scientist discovered machines and apparatus that
can detect a possible disaster and find ways to control it.

People from all cultures contribute to science. Different people living from different environment
has a different way of living. But because of this characteristic they have discovered things that fits on
what they need. As time goes by, people from this places invented things that can help them cope to the
environment they belong. They have find ways on how to make their life more comfortable and easy.

2. Explain the goals of science elementary education. Write in at least 2 paragraphs.

Teaching science develop scientific attitudes and values. They loved doing experiments, asking
questions, and finding answers by doing interesting activities. Children nowadays are so curious, they are
very experimental and keen observers, a reason why we really need to teach Science on elementary
grades. We have to develop their manner of thinking, ways of reasoning and reacting and develop their
ways of doing things.

Gain an understanding of functional knowledge. Children mind can easily be filled with ideas,
facts and information. Teaching them science enable them to understand how a certain things work. We
can achieve this understanding by letting learners do some practical activities that can make them
discover a certain information and will let them apply it on their daily life. As long as they discover new
ideas they will continue to find more. They will be interested in discovering something new. And soon
they will learn to collaborate with others. They will start to investigate and understand ideas on their own
with the help of science.

3. What are the challenges in teaching science in elementary grades? Write in at least 2
paragraphs.

One of the challenges in teaching science is that science is so broad. We cannot easily define
science. Especially when we are not a ‘’science expert teacher’’. To really understand and deliver our
lessons effectively to the learners we have to conduct experiments and practical activities. But doing this
needs a lot of time for preparations. We also have to consider what our learners prior knowledge. For
example did the learner knows how to read or write? Can they document their observations? We have to
be aware if our learners can get along with the activity, discussion or experiments that we are doing. We
have to know what our learners capability so that we can adjust our teaching strategies.

Another challenge is how can we make our lesson interesting? How can we make our learner
cooperate during our class? Whatever strategy or method we use in teaching if our learners are not
interested it’s useless. So we have to catch their interest first so that we can make our teaching and
learning effective and productive.

Challenges in Teaching Science Education in Elementary Grades

As a future educator, we cannot choose what subject we will soon be teaching and one of those
subjects we have to prepare for is teaching science. As easy as 1, 2, 3, if we are really a ‘’science expert
educator’’, but what if we are not? How can we teach science? How shall we deliver our lessons to the
learners if even us don’t really know what science is? What should we have to do? How can we get our
learners attention?

Defining science is one of the challenges of teaching science. When we are going to ask our
learners what is science, they will definitely have different perspectives. Science is a very broad subject.
We have to learn how to investigate, experiment, work creatively and think critically for us to learn and
teach science.

Preparing for a science activity is also a challenge for both educator and learner. We cannot
control what will happen when we are conducting experiments. When we encounter some accidents it is
also a challenge how we should handle the situation.

Teaching science in elementary grades needs a lot of effort. Developing simple methods on how
to bring science into a class is such a big help. Overcoming this challenges will soon makes us a good
science educator.
