Problem Solving Session IV

The Figure shows a steel shaft supported on two rolling bearing A and B. The shaft
transmitted a power of 10 KW at 1000 rpm from V-belt pulley C to the spur gear D.
Calculate the shaft diameter if it is made of St-50 with σy = 350 MPa, and σe =250 MPa,
with factor of safety and stress concentration factor of 2 and 1.5, respectively.
The shaft rotating at 200
rpm carries a spur gear C
having pitch circle diameter
of 250 mm. The teeth are of
the 20°, full-depth, involute
form. Pulley (500 mm
diameter) A receives 10 kw
from below. Gear C delivers
6 kw to the mating gear
below it. Chain sprocket D
(150 mm diameter) delivers 4
kw to a shaft above.
Determine the maximum
shaft diameter, (ST50 with
yield strength of 300 MPa and
endurance limit of 200 MPa)
( 1 in = 25 mm)
The shaft in figure is a part of a grain-drying system. At A is a propeller-type
fan that require 12 kW when rotating at 500 rpm. The flat belt pulley delivers
6 Kw to a screw conveyor handling the grain, all the power comes into the
shaft through v-belt sheave at C. (ST50 with yield strength of 300 MPa and
endurance limit of 200 MPa) ( 1 in = 25 mm)
