Important

1) Read all problems first, then start with the

one you think is clearer and requires less time to
solve.

2) Solve the following questions.

Question 1# (15 Marks)

Calculate the torque that can be transmitted by each shaft hub connection
shown in the following figures:

Question 2# (15 Marks)

The shaft in Figure is the drive shaft for a large, bulk material conveyor
The gear receives 40 kw and rotates at 120 rpm. Each chain sprocket
delivers 20 kw to one side of the conveyor. Determine the maximum
shaft diameter, (ST50 with yield strength of 300 MPa and endurance limit
of 200 MPa), (1 in = 25 mm)

Question 3# (15 Marks)

A cover of a pressure vessel is fastened to its flange by 6 bolts. The

stiffness of the bolt Cs = 200 KN/mm and of the tight parts Cp = 400
KN/mm. The initial tightening force each bolt is 30 KN. The internal
pressure of the vessel P = 15 MPa, the open area of the vessel with 120
mm diameter. The material class of the bolt is 8.8.

a. Find the acting force on the bolt and the tight parts before and
after effect of internal pressure.
b. Find the deformation of the bolt and the tight parts before and
after effect of internal pressure.
c. Draw the force deformation diagram to scale for the
connection showing all the details of all force and
deformation.
d. Calculate the required bolt diameter based on factor of safety
S of 2.
e. Find the leakage pressure.

Question 4 # (15 Marks)

The figure shows a weldment subjected to an eccentric force F. Find the

safe force F if the allowable shear stress in the welds is τallow = 140 MPa.
The dimesions b, c, d, and h are 120, 200, 80, and 6, respecively.
