I am glad Daloy is back in
circulation, its first edition since I
took over as bishop of Pasig.
One thing we the clergy of Pasig
have envisioned in terms of sup-
port system is to keep our people
posted of important events, proj-
ects and programs in our Diocese.
Our diocesan website was launched
last February 2012 and has become
a source of information among our
parishioners and friends here and
abroad. With the diocesan news-
paper we are equipped with tools
to proclaim the word of God, com-
municate various activities as well
as needs and concerns of our Dio-
cese, Parishes, and those of the
people we serve.
I therefore encourage our priests
in-charge of different ministries to
make use of this medium in updat-
ing our people of their ministry
programs and activities. I am con-
fident that as parishioners are made
aware of the work we are doing for

T his writer recognizes the vast po-
tentials of using media to reach out
to our parishioners, especially our un-
churched Catholic brethren.
Pasig, Pateros, and Taguig, with an
estimated population of 1.1 million (ac-
cording to the 2007 NSO estimate), has
94% belonging to the DE classes with
majority working in the industrial sec-
tor while the rest are in agricultural and
casual sectors. The average monthly
income is pegged at 5 thousand pesos
a month.
According to SWS survey of 2000,
52% of the Filipinos regard themselves
as happy. But further on, it was re-
vealed especially among young people
that happiness depends on the follow-
ing factors: careers, families, love, and
money. The economic classes also
reveal differing concepts of happiness:
the CDE people would focus more on
the financial side to be happy while AB
people would be happier when with
their families.
Note that the religious dimension at
this point in time is becoming an irrel-
evant factor of happiness.
Media-wise, a research media group,
the Synovate, released the results of
a survey conducted last 2007. 65% of
the middle and upper class group like
looking through advertisements in
magazines and newspapers, 42% read
the daily newspaper while 31% read a
tagalog newspaper. 47% read a maga-
zine, with the females outnumbering

represents Christ, the Savior, Shepherd
and Teacher. He said of Himself, ‘I am

Bishop Mylo.
Bishop Mylo had stricken the door
three times with a hammer while Msgr.

Bishop invited the congregation to en-

“The significance of the designated

mission of temporal punishment grant-
ed by the Church,” the Bishop said in
his homily.
He further expounded, “Our Jubilee
Door is a door of faith. As we ap-
proach the Year of Faith this coming
October, Pope Benedict XVI tells us,
‘The door of faith (Acts 14:27) is al-
ways open for us, ushering us into the
life of communion with God and offer-
ing entry into his Church... We pray

“We believe that our Jubilee Door of

Looking forward to our 500th
CBCP Pastoral Statement on the Era of the New Evangelization
“G o and make disciples… (Mt.
28:19). We look forward
with gratitude and joy to March 16,
2021, the fifth centenary of the com-
ing of Christianity to our beloved
land. We remember with thanksgiving
the first Mass celebrated in Limasawa
Island on Easter Sunday March 31 that
same blessed year. We remember the
baptism of Rajah Humabon who was
given his Christian name Carlos and
his wife Hara Amihan who was bap-
tized Juana in 1521. Our eyes gaze on
the Santo Niño de Cebu, the oldest re-
ligious icon in the Philippines, gift of
mission and witnessing to the Gospel
given to humanity by our Lord Jesus
Christ and the opening up of people’s
lives, society, culture and history to the
Person of Jesus Christ and to His living
community, the Church.
This “New Evangelization” is primar-
ily addressed to those who have drifted
from the Faith and from the Church in
traditionally Catholic countries, espe-
cially in the West.
What we are being called to do by this
task of “New Evangelization” in Asia
is to consider anew “the new methods
and means for transmitting the Good

no Catholics that same year. Indeed the
year 2021 will be a year of great jubilee
for the Church in the Philippines.
We shall therefore embark on a nine-
year spiritual journey that will culmi-
nate with the great jubilee of 2021. It is
a grace-filled event of blessings for the
Church starting October 21, 2012 until
March 16, 2021.
How opportune indeed that on Octo-
ber 21 this year, the Holy Father Pope
Benedict XVI will add another Filipino
to the canon of saints of the Church,
our very own Visayan proto-martyr Pe-
dro Calungsod who gave his life for the
faith on the morning of April 2, 1672
in Guam.
The canonization of Pedro Calungsod
will take place under the brilliant light
of the fiftieth anniversary of the open-
ing of the Second Vatican Council, the
twentieth year of the publication of the
Catechism of the Catholic Church, and
the declaration of the Year of Faith from
October 11, 2012 until November 24,
2013 by the Holy Father. The XIII Or-
dinary General Assembly of the Synod
of Bishops with the theme “The New
Evangelization for the Transmission of
the Christian Faith” will take place in
Rome from October 7 to 28 this year.

All these events happening this year
are bound together by the themes of
“faith” and “evangelization”. Evange-

cially to our Asian neighbors as a fruit
of our intensified intimacy with the
Lord.
What will this era of new evangeli-
zation for the Philippines consist of?
The task stands on four pillars:
First, fostering and fulfilling the
“missio ad gentes”, as a special voca-
tion of the Church in our country, ef-
fectively involving our laypeople, our
“Christifideles” brothers and sisters;
our priests and seminarians; men and
women in consecrated life.
Secondly, “bringing Good News to
the poor.” Again and again, Filipino
Catholics coming together to discern
priorities, have seen that the Church
here must become genuinely “a Church
for and with the poor.”
Thirdly, reaching out to those among
us whose faith-life has been largely
eroded and even lost due to the sur-
rounding confusion, moral relativ-
ism, doubt, and agnosticism; reaching
out tothose who have drifted from the
Faith and the Church and have joined
other religious sects.
Lastly, awakening or reawakening in
faith, forming and animating in Chris-
tian life our young people and youth
sector groups in both urban and rural
settings.
A nine-year journey for the New
Evangelization has already been chart-
ed climaxing with the Jubilee Year
2021: Integral Faith Formation (2013);
the Laity (2014); the Poor (2015); the
Eucharist and of the Family (2016); the
Parish as a Communion of Communi-
ties (2017); the Clergy and Religious
(2018); the Youth (2019); Ecumenism
and Inter-Religious Dialogue (2020);
Missio ad gentes (2021). These are the
nine pastoral priorities of the Church in
the Philippines.
In the time before us, we will focus on
these dimensions of faith, evangeliza-
tion and discipleship one by one. And
it is most propitious that as we received
the faith 500 years ago, so with the
Year 2021,
we envision to become a truly sending
Church.
In the face of a secularism which in
some parts of our present world has it-
self become a kind of a “dominant re-
ligion”, in the face of the reality of bil-
lions who live in our time and who have
not truly encountered Jesus Christ nor
heard of His Gospel, how challenged
we are, how challenged we must be,
to enter into the endeavor of the “New
Evangelization!” We for whom Jesus
has been and is truly the Way, the Truth
and the Life, how can we not want and
long and share Him with brothers and
sisters around us who are yet to know
and love Him, who are yet to receive
the fullness of Life for which we have
all been created, and without which
their hearts will be ever restless – un-
til they find Jesus and His heart which
awaits them?
May our Lady, Mary Mother of Our
Lord, lead us all in our longing and la-
bors to bring her son Jesus Christ into
our time and our world, our Emmanuel
– our God who remains with us now
and yet whose coming again in glory
we await.

Blessed Pedro Calungsod, 2nd Filipino Saint
T he countdown is on for the
canonization of Blessed Pedro
Calungsod as the second Filipino
saint on October 21, 2012 at the Vati-
can.
The National Commission is work-
ing in collaboration with the Episcopal
Commission on Mission in the nation-
wide catechesis and promotion of the
cause of Blessed Pedro Calungsod. It
is composed of the following: Arch-
bishop Jose Palma, D.D., Chairman;
Archbishop Luis Antonio Tagle, D.D.,
Co-chairman; Archbishop Socrates
Villegas, Bishop Julito Cortes, Bishop
Joel Baylon, Bishop Edwin dela Peña,

The commission has decided to hold

Pedro Calungsod to Archdioceses and
Dioceses all over the country dubbed
“Duaw Nasud”, a Cebuano term that
means “to visit different places.”
The visit will start with activities
in Manila particularly in Intramuros,
which in 1672 basically was what Ma-
nila was. Then the visit will go north
to Vigan (Nueva Segovia). From there
a motorcade of the image of San Pedro
Calungsod will be organized to move
down to Naga City (Nueva Caceres),
making some pre-designated overnight
stops in some archdioceses and dioces-
es. After covering Luzon, the visit will
proceed to the Visayas and Mindanao,
before arriving in Cebu for the Nation-
al Thanksgiving Mass celebration.
Meanwhile, the Manila Archdioc-
esan Catechetical Commission con-
ducted a trainors’ training seminar for
catechist coordinators, representatives
from the accredited travel agencies for
the canonization rites in Rome, and
other Church leaders last May 21. A
catechetical primer on the life, mar-
tyrdom, and glorification of Blessed
Pedro Calungsod was given by Msgr.

nity to intensify the witness of char-
ity. He had challenged everybody by
saying, “Once you give your total self,
once you give your life… you become
more fulfilled… that’s offering, that’s
oblation, that’s generosity… that is
FAITH IN ACTION!... You have faith
if you continue to serve even when no
one is present to praise you.”

Who is Pedro Calungsod?
According to the canonization bulle-
tin dated July 15, (cf. http://cebuarch-
diocese.org) Calungsod was a teenaged
catechist who served at the Jesuit mis-
sion in the Marianas from June 1668
until his death on April 2, 1672.
He was known to have quickly adapt-
ed to the Chamorro way of life and lan-
guage so that he was an efficient guide
to the priests, particularly Don Diego
Luis de San Vitores, S.J.
Pedro was the sole companion of
Don San Vitores in the early morning
of April 2, 1672 in the village of Tom-
hon, when two natives killed them one
after the other after San Vitores with
Calungsod baptized the baby daughter
of the Chieftain Mata’pang.
Wikipedia on Pedro Calungsod nar-
rates: “Witnesses claim that Calungsod
could have escaped the attack, but did
not want to leave San Vitores alone. He
was hit in the chest by a spear and fell
to the ground, then Hirao immediately
charged towards him and finished him
off with machete blow to the head. San
Vitores absolved Calungsod before he
too was killed.”
Wikipedia reports that through
Calungsod and San Vitores’ missionary
efforts, many native Chamorros con-
verted to Roman Catholicism. Calung-
sod was beatified on 5 March 2000
by Blessed Pope John Paul II while

faith in Nagasaki, Japan.
Regarding Calungsod’s charitable
works and virtuous deeds, Pope John
Paul II declared: “... From his child-
hood, Pedro Calungsod declared him-
self unwaveringly for Christ and re-
sponded generously to his call. Young
people today can draw encouragement
and strength from the example of Pe-
dro, whose love of Jesus inspired him
to devote his teenage years to teaching
the faith as a lay catechist. Leaving
family and friends behind, Pedro will-
ingly accepted the challenge put to him
by Fr. Diego de San Vitores to join him
on the Mission to the Chamorros. In a
spirit of faith, marked by strong Eu-
charistic and Marian devotions, Pedro
undertook the demanding work asked
of him and bravely faced the many ob-
stacles and difficulties he met. In the
face of imminent danger, Pedro would
not forsake Fr. Diego, but as a “good
soldier of Christ” preferred to die at the
missionary’s side.”

An NCR Youth Day
for Life: MaKN

L ast July 22, 2012, an NCR Youth
Day for Life was held in Paco
Catholic School. It was dubbed
“LIVE, LEARN, and LOVE” in re-
sponse to the most challenging issue
of today faced by the youth - the RH
Bill.
What is RH Bill? Do we really know
the meaning of this or do we just know
it only by its name? Most of us, espe-
cially the youth, don’t have a deeper
understanding of this issue. This is the
reason why the National Capital Region
Youth Coordinating Council headed by
Bro. Peter Pardo, Youth Coordinator of

the Diocese of Parañaque, initiated an
event called “An NCR Youth Day for
Life”.
This event was participated by 1,400
youth from the Archdiocese of Manila,
Dioceses of Kalookan, Novaliches,
Antipolo, Imus, Parañaque, Pasig, and
Cubao, and the Apostolic Vicariates of
Puerto Princesa, Taytay, and Palawan.
From our very own Diocese of Pasig,
His Excellency, Most Rev. Mylo Hu-
bert C. Vergara, D.D., sent 130 youth
delegates in the said occasion headed
by our Youth Coordinator Ms. Rhea
Lavilla, and Youth Director Rev. Fr.
Joeffrey Brian V. Catuiran. Out of the
names of each diocese, they formed
an ancronym called “MaKN An Im-
P3CT”.
The event started with worship songs.
Welcome remarks and introduction
about the event were given by NCR
Youth Coordinator Bro. Peter Pardo,
and Fr. Jerome Cruz, Youth Director of
NCR and Diocese of Kalookan.
They invited several speakers to share
their knowledge and views on the said
issue. Dra. Angelita Aguirre, a profes-
sor at UST FMS, discussed the Profes-
sional Ethics in the current socio-eco-
nomic concerns. She also talked about
the medical aspect of the RH Bill.
Leanne Rosal, a registered nurse and
a pro-life advocate, shared her experi-
ences on her profession and why she is
against RH Bill. These taught her how

The Regional Director of World
Youth Alliance Asia Pacific, Renelyn
Tan, explained why “RH Bill, bakit ‘di
kita ma-take?” and Rep. Fatima Aliah
Q. Dimaporo, a representative of 2nd
District, Lanao del Norte, also shared
her view against it.
After lunch break, a skit entitled “Sa
May Picket Line” was presented by the
youth from the Diocese of Antipolo.
Workships were held in the afternoon.

the workshop on LIVE; Sis. Roselle
Cortez, youth coordinator
of the Diocese of Novali-
ches, on LOVE; and Bro.

After all the workshops,
each one in the auditorium
stood up and altogether
tore to pieces a paper
which on it was written
the reasons why each one
was against the RH Bill. Every cried
out, “Yes to God! No to RH Bill!”
The Eucharistic celebration was pre-
sided by Kalookan Bishop Deogracias
Iñiguez and concelebrated by priests
from different dioceses.

As a servant youth leader and a nurse

object the passage of this RH Bill. I
join with all the youth of today and the

Catholic Church as we choose to value
procreation and life and support and
promote natural family planning.
We also choose to LEARN in an
educated society rooted on values.
This RH Bill will open wide the doors
of negative and destructive curiosity
among us.
We choose to LIVE in a society that ne-

hree days of learning, reflection,
prayers, faith stories and fun out-
door activities are days that nobody
will ever forget!
Hundreds of young people, youth
leaders, and active members from the
different parishes of the Diocese of Pa-
sig gathered together for the 1st BINHI
Youth Camp. It was held last April 27
to 29, 2012 at Rancho Bueno, Rich
Golden Shower Montessori Center,
Antipolo City. This activity is one of
the many ways that the youth can jour-
ney with fellow youth and serve one
another.

The camp’s theme was taken from the
Gospel of Matthew, “But others fell on
good ground and yielded a crop, some
a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
He who has ears to hear, let him hear”.
(Matthew 13:8)
It is the vision of the Pasig Dioc-
esan Youth Ministry organizers under
the Directorship of Rev. Fr. Joeffrey
Brian V. Catuiran, J.C.L. and headed
by Ms. Rhea Lavilla, Youth Coordina-
tor, that every camper’s heart will gra-
ciously receive the seed of Faith, Hope,
Love, and renewed spirit in the ser-
vice for others. Furthermore, it is the
wish of everyone that after the camp,
each camper will become a BINHI to
their fellow youth, and that seed will
grow and bear fruits in the family, the
Church, and society.
The camp was designed with outdoor
activities, talks and reflections about
experiences in Amazing Race and
Lakbay Kawan. The campers found

our neighbor by instilling respect and
recognizing our dignity as human per-
sons created in the image and likeness
of God.
I am a youth of God and I value the
sanctity and beauty of life. Yes to God!
Yes to life! No to RH bill!
themselves overcoming series of team
building activities: climbing over the
wooden wall, making their way with
no verbal communication, and reach-
ing the finish line by paddle in order
to traverse the sandy soil. Things got
chaotic and exciting because they were
wet as they took the challenges. To-
ward the end of the first day, the camp-
ers had a bonfire and showed off their
talents of singing, dancing, and acting
during Gabi ng K (fellowship night).
At the last day of the camp, the par-
ticipants went back to their respec-
tive vicariates, did the morning praise,
and ended up planting seeds
symbolizing the Word of God
which the Sower planted in ev-
ery Christian’s heart.
This challenged each camper
after having planted the seed in
his or her life to let this grow
by living the Word of God. The
camp was concluded with a Eu-
charistic celebration presided
by His Excellency, Most. Rev.
Mylo Hubert C. Vergara and concel-
ebrated by Rev. Fr. Joeffrey Brian V.
Catuiran.
The bishop challenged the youth to be
a seed that should grow in one’s own
setting, be it in the home, at school or
parish, and in the community.
There was also a special moment of
dialogue with His Excellency and the
youth where the Bishop expressed his
special concern for them and expressed
his hope that all the parishes would
send their delegates in the next youth
event.
The challenge for me, I think, is that
I am being asked to nourish this seed
“BINHI” so that when it grows within
my heart, I can readily give and share
it with other young people at home, in
school, and with the community. Tru-
ly, it was a memorable experience - a
BINHI experience that was planted in
my life as a youth.

The Immaculate Conception
Cathedral (ICC) sponsoring
ALS graduates totalled sixty
HOLY FAMILY PARISH - The Holy
Family Parish prepared its parish-
ioners for the gradual implementa-
tion of the New English Translation
of the Roman Missal. Last May 31,
2012, Fr. Jorge Bellosillo and Fr. Japs
Apun (parish priest and resident guest
priest, respectively) gave an orienta-
tion attended by leaders and members
of the different parish ministries and
organizations.
The introduction given by Fr. Jorge
emphasized that nothing is changing
with the way we are celebrating mass
nine – 52 fifty two from ICC
main with eight in elementary
and forty four in high school.
The Kapitbahayan Sub-Parish
of ICC had seventeen gradu-
ates – three in elementary and
fourteen in high school. Four
graduates from ICC received
medals for 3rd Honorable
Mention: Janell Allen Cruz
and John Carlo Estrella under
ICC Teacher Moonclaire De
Clarin; Michellaine Mazo and
May Ann Rojo under Kapitba-
hayan Teacher Mr. Pol Justo.
The ICC-ALS program is
new translation tries to achieve great-
er adherence to the Latin text. Fr.
Japs’ presentation answered the Why,
How and What of the new translation.
To help the congregation understand
better not just the changes but the
mass in its entirety, flyers containing
catechesis of the new translation will
be distributed to parishioners. (Rica
