WHERE TO USE
Mapelastic Smart is used to internally and externally
waterproof and protect new or repaired concrete
structures and cementitious surfaces in general, which
are subject to vibration or may suffer from cracking
and for waterproofing water retaining structures such
as channels, culverts, faces of dams, swimming
pools, water features, basins, storage tanks, balconies
and terraces.
Some application examples
• Waterproofing viaducts, faces of dams and basins.
• Waterproofing bathrooms, showers, balconies,
terraces, swimming pools etc. before laying tiles using
a compatible MAPEI adhesive.
• Waterproofing plasterboard, render or cementitious
surfaces, lightweight cement blocks, marine-grade
plywood and most commonly used building
substrates.
• Flexible protection coating to new concrete structures
or repaired structures subject to minor deformation
under load.
• Protection of cementitious renders or concrete with
cracks due to shrinkage, minor movement caused
by thermal gradients or dynamic stresses due to the
passage of vehicles, against infiltration of water and
aggressive elements from the atmosphere.
• As a highly flexible anti-carbonation and protective
coating for concrete structures including bridges,
highways and railway viaducts.
• Protection of structures with an inadequate layer of
concrete cover to the reinforcement steel against the
penetration of aggressive elements.
•P
 rotection of concrete surfaces which may come into
contact with sea water, de-icing salts, such as sodium
or calcium chloride and sulphates.
ADVANTAGES
• High performance: a 2 mm thick film can tolerate
cracks up to 2.5 mm wide.

of Mapetex Sel reinforcement.
• Product in compliance with EN 14891 and EN 1504-2
coating (C) according to the PI, MCM and IR principles
(protection systems for concrete surfaces).

• Compatible with adhesives used for fixing ceramic,
mosaic and natural stone coverings.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Mapelastic Smart is a two-component coating
based on cementitious binders, fine-grained selected
aggregates, special additives and synthetic polymers
in water dispersion, blended according to a formula
developed in MAPEI’s own research laboratories.
When the two components are mixed together, a free
flowing material is obtained, which may easily be
applied by brush, roller or spray using suitable spraying
equipment on both horizontal and vertical surfaces at a
thickness of approximately 2 mm.
Due to the content and high quality of the synthetic
polymers used in the formulation, the hardened layer of
Mapelastic Smart remains constantly flexible under all
environmental conditions.

protected and waterproofed with Mapelastic
p Smart are hardwearing, even under

particularly adverse climatic conditions, in
coastal areas with a high salt content in the
atmosphere or in industrial areas where the
air is particularly polluted.
Mapelastic Smart is completely waterproof
up to a pressure of 1.5 bar and resistant to
the penetration of aggressive substances
which are present in the atmosphere, such
as carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide and
sulphuric anhydride, and soluble salts such
as chlorides and sulphates, which are present
in seawater or in the ground.
Mapelastic Smart has excellent bonding
properties on all cementitious, ceramic and
marble surfaces as long as they are sound
and sufficiently clean.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Preparation of the substrate
A) Protection and waterproofing of
concrete structures and elements (e.g.
Columns and beams for highway and
railway viaducts, cooling towers, chimneys,
underpasses, retaining walls, applications
in coastal areas, basins, swimming pools,
channels, faces of dams, faces of balconies,
roof upstands, etc.).
The surface to be protected must be sound
and all loose or degraded concrete should
Waterproofing of be removed. Where necessary clean the
terraces by brush concrete and any exposed reinforcing
steel by sweep blasting or other approved
mechanical means, to remove all dirt, any
corrosion products, cement, laitance, grease,
oil and any other deleterious materials. The
reinforcing steel, when cleaned should be
protected using Mapefer or Mapefer 1K.
Should repairs be required these should
be carried out using products from the
Mapegrout or Planitop range of MAPEI
repair materials before application of
Mapelastic Smart.
Surfaces to be coated with Mapelastic
Smart must be dampened beforehand with
potable grade water to achieve a saturated
surface dry condition (SSD).
B) Waterproofing terraces, balconies
and swimming pools
•C EMENTITIOUS SCREEDS:
Waterproofing of – cracks
 caused by plastic or hygrometric
terraces by trowel
shrinkage must be filled beforehand with
Eporip;
– if thicknesses of up to 2 cm have to be first
levelled (to create slopes, filling undulations
etc.) use Nivoplan or Adesilex P4
prior to application of Mapelastic Smart.
• EXISTING FLOORS:
– existing floor coverings such as ceramic,
porcelain tiles, clinker or terracotta, etc.
must be well bonded to the substrate
and free of substances which could
compromise the bonding, such as grease,
oil, wax, paint, etc.
• RENDERS:
– cementitious renders must be sufficiently
cured (7 days per cm of thickness in good
weather conditions in accordance with
good construction practice), well bonded to
the substrate, sound and free from all dust
and paint;
– dampen absorbent surfaces with potable
grade water to achieve a saturated surface
dry condition (SSD).

Completion of the waterproofing layer in
the waterproofing activity it is essential
that particular attention is paid to details.
Mapeband TPE, Mapeband and other
special accessories are indispensable and a
determining factor. Mapeband TPE is used
to seal structural joints and joints subject to
high dynamic strain, Mapeband is used to
waterproof construction joints, joints between
horizontal and vertical elements and special
kits from the Drain range are used to seal
drain holes. It is absolutely essential that
special care is taken in these critical areas
after levelling out and cleaning the substrate
before applying the Mapelastic Smart.
Preparation of the mix
Pour component B (liquid) into a suitable,
clean, rust-free container. Then slowly add
component A (powder) while stirring with a
mechanical mixer.
Carefully mix Mapelastic Smart for a few
minutes, making sure that no powder remains
stuck to the sides or the bottom of the
container.
Keep stirring until a perfectly homogenous
lump-free mix is obtained, to a maximum of
5 minutes.
Use a low-speed mechanical mixer for this
operation to avoid air entrapment in to the
mix. Mixing by hand is not recommended.
For spray application Mapelastic Smart may
be mixed using a range of mechanical mixers
and spray equipment.

obtained from your local MAPEI technical
representative).
If this technique is used, ensure that the mix
is homogenous and has no lumps before it is
poured into the hopper of the pump.
Manual application
Mapelastic Smart must be applied within
60 minutes of mixing.

Smooth off the prepared surface by
applying a thin layer of Mapelastic Smart
with a smooth trowel. Apply the second
coat on top of the first layer when it has
set (typically 4-5 hours) to achieve, a final
thickness not less than 2 mm.
When used for waterproofing terraces,
balconies, basins and swimming pools,
it is recommended to insert a layer
of Mapenet 150, alkaline resistant
fibre glass mesh in the first layer of
fresh Mapelastic Smart, to act as
reinforcement (see Mapenet 150
technical data sheet).
The use of Mapenet 150 should be
considered where additional points of
stress are anticipated.
Where enhanced elongation and crack
bridging properties are required it
is recommended to insert a layer of
Mapetex Sel, alkaline resistant macro-
holed non-woven polypropylene fabric
(refer to the Mapetex Sel technical
data sheet), between the two coats of
Mapelastic Smart.
The first layer of Mapelastic Smart
must be at least 1 mm thick. While it is
still fresh, carefully lay the Mapetex Sel
on the surface and press it in using a
flat-bladed trowel to make sure that it
is perfectly embedded. After 4-5 hours
apply the second coat of Mapelastic
Smart to completely cover the fabric
and smooth over the surface using a
flat-bladed trowel.
After applying Mapelastic Smart, allow
approx. 5 days for curing before laying
ceramic tiles.
This waiting time can be longer under
colder climatic conditions.
Laying ceramic tiles on
Mapelastic Smart
•B  ALCONIES AND SWIMMING POOLS:
– lay with MAPEI cementitious adhesives
and leave wide joints. In swimming
pools, use Granirapid (class C2F S1)
or Kerabond T + 100% Isolastic (class
C2 S2) or Kerabond T + 50% Isolastic
(class C2 S1) mixed with 50% water,
depending on the type and size of tiles.
If mosaics are laid, Adesilex P10 +
Isolastic (class C2TE S1) mixed with
50% water may also be used;
–g  rout the joints between the tiles with
suitable cementitious grouts, such as
Keracolor FF (class CG2 WA) mixed
with Fugolastic, Ultracolor Plus
(class CG2 WA) or epoxy resin such as
Kerapoxy (class RG);
– s eal expansion joints with Mapeflex
PU21, Mapeflex PU20, Mapesil AC,
Mapeflex PU 50 SL, Mapeflex PU40
or Mapeflex PU45, according to site
conditions and requirements.
Application by spraying
After preparing the surface (refer to
“Preparation of the substrate” section)
spray on at least two coats of Mapelastic
Smart at a thickness of at least 1 mm per
layer with a rendering machine fitted with
a spraying lance. Smooth and level the
applied compound to form a final layer at
least 2 mm thick.
Successive coats must only be
applied when the previous one is dry
(after 4-5 hours).
Where enhanced elongation and crack
bridging properties are required it
is recommended to insert a layer of
Mapetex Sel, alkaline resistant macro-
holed non-woven polypropylene fabric
(refer to the Mapetex Sel technical
data sheet), between the two coats of
Mapelastic Smart. The first layer of
Mapelastic Smart must be at least 1 mm
thick. While it is still fresh, carefully lay the
Mapetex Sel on the surface and press it
in using a flat-bladed trowel to make sure
that it is perfectly embedded.
After 4-5 hours apply the second coat of
Mapelastic Smart to completely cover
the fabric and smooth over the surface
using a flat-bladed trowel.
If Mapelastic Smart is used for
protecting stacks and joists on bridges,
railway underpasses and façades on
buildings, etc. the product may be painted
using products from the Elastocolor
range, which are acrylic resin-based water
dispersion and are available in a wide
range of colours which may be obtained
using the ColorMap® authomatic
colouring system.
If Mapelastic Smart is used on horizontal
concrete surfaces not for pedestrian use
such as on flat roofs, the product may be
over-coated with Elastocolor Waterproof
flexible acrylic resin-based paint in water
dispersion (refer to the technical data
sheet for Elastocolor Waterproof).
Elastocolor Waterproof is available in a
wide range of colours obtained using the
ColorMap® automatic colouring system
and must be applied at least 20 days after
applying Mapelastic Smart.
Precautions to be taken during
and after application
• No special precautions need to be taken
when the temperature is around +20°C.
• During hot weather, it is advisable to
keep the product out of direct sunlight
before use (powder and liquid).
• After application, and in particularly
dry, hot or windy climatic conditions,
it is recommended that the surface
is protected from rapid evaporations,
in-line with good construction practice.
Cleaning
Due to the high bond strength of
Mapelastic Smart, even on metals,
we recommend that work tools and
equipment are washed with water before
the material sets. Once it has set, cleaning
may only be carried out by mechanical
means.
CONSUMPTION
Application by brush or roller:
Approx. 1.6 kg/m² per mm of thickness.
Spray gun application:
Dependent upon site conditions and trials.
PACKAGING
Units of 30 kg:
component A: 20 kg bags;
component B: 10 kg drums.
STORAGE
When stored in dry conditions in the
original, unopened bags, Mapelastic Smart
component A has a shelf life of 12 months.
If stored at high temperature and or high
humidity, the shelf life may be reduced.
Mapelastic Smart component B when kept
in the original un-opened packaging may be
stored for up to 24 months.
Store Mapelastic Smart in a dry place and at
a temperature of at least +5°C.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR
PREPARATION AND APPLICATION
Mapelastic Smart component A is irritant,
contains cement that when in contact with
sweat or other body fluids causes irritant
alkaline reaction and allergic reactions to
those predisposed.
Mapelastic Smart component B is not
considered hazardous according to current
regulations regarding the classification of
mixtures. If the product comes into contact
with the eyes or skin, wash immediately
with plenty of clean water and seek medical
attention.
