LEGAL BASES OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
ACTIVITY 1
Explain briefly the importance of these laws and policies of special and inclusive education to the
following:
a. Students with special needs
 These laws preserve the rights of students and their families and help integrate students with
special needs into society without segregating them. Although the laws differ slightly from state
to state, the acts passed by Congress help to standardize the treatment of students with special
needs across the country.
b. Parents
 The law made to give parents or legal guardians a voice in their child’s education. At every point
in the process, the law gives parents specific rights and protections.
c. Teachers
 Laws were made for the people- to have harmonious and good relationship with each other, to
avoid problems, misunderstandings, conflicts and the like. As laws were made for the people, it
is then our duty to follow and know it by heart. As for the teacher, knowing the legal bases of
inclusive education is a must. It is very important to know, understand and follow it to be able
to exercise their rights and to treat their pupils properly. A teacher will treat his/her pupils
properly and nothing will go wrong if he/she is aware of the different legal bases of special and
inclusive education.

ACTIVITY 2
React to the following statement.
1. Learning has no boundaries.
 Life is a never ending learning process. Learning in life should not be limited to within the
realms of your school boundaries. It should extend beyond as it is a beautiful enriching
experience which widens the horizons of your mind and enhances your thinking capabilities.
There are always new things to learn and discover; study new languages, find about cultures,
norms, values of other societies, and search geographical locations and history. Find why
squirrels bury nuts and octopuses have three hearts. Keep learning new things every day, it will
keep you fresh and energized and keep the brain cells active. The world is a big whirlpool of
knowledge. There will always be stuff you didn’t know and facts you were not aware of.

2. No child left behind.

 No Child Left Behind provides incentives for schools to demonstrate progress in students with
special needs. It also allows for students to seek alternative options if schools are not meeting
their academic, social or emotional needs.

3. Education for all.

 Education means to understand and learn by exploring new adventures. The basic education is
necessary for everyone to know the difference between good and bad for them. Education
must be imparted to all children up to a certain age and the basic minimum knowledge and
skills must be imparted to every person.
