Self-assessment questions

1. What is the first federal definition of the gifted and talented?

 The first federal definition of the gifted and talented was contained in the 1972
Marland Report. Gifted and talented children are capable of high performance and
demonstrate potential ability in any of the following six areas:
o General intellectual ability
o Specific academic aptitude
o Creative or productive thinking
o Leadership ability
o Ability in the visual or performing arts
o Psychomotor ability
2. Enumerate the three key contemporary and related definitions of gifted and talented.
 Renzulli’s Three-Trait Definition
 Piirto’s Pyramid Model of Talent Development
 Maker’s Problem-Solving Perspective

3. Write only 5 dimensions of creative behavior enumerated by Guilford.

 Fluency
 Flexibility
 Novelty/originality
 Elaboration
 Synthesizing ability
 Analyzing ability
 Ability to reorganize or redefine existing ideas
 Complexity

4. What is differentiated curriculum?

 A differentiated curriculum is a modified in depth and pace that is used in special
education programs for gifted and talented students. Differentiated curriculum is a
modified way of teaching students based on their strengths and weaknesses
is intended for average learners and lacks the competencies that match the learning
characteristics of high-ability students.

Let’s think about it!

1. How would you describe gifted and talented learners? Answer it in your own words.
 Gifted and talented learners mean a child or youth who performs at or shows
the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment
when compared to others of the same age, experience or environment.

2. Why is creativity considered as the highest expression of giftedness? Explain your answer
briefly.
 It is because by its nature it’s the most accessible, it’s designed to be
appealing to people oftentimes, as with music, poetry, oil or acrylic painting,
etc. and that it’s got fewer barriers to entry, therefore, than the other more
intellectual subjects and disciplines.

3. Are high achievers and gifted learners the same? Justify your answer.
 No, it is possible for a high achiever to also be a gifted child. It's just that not
every high achiever is gifted. In the same way, not every gifted learner is also
a creative thinker, but it is unlikely that a creative thinker would not also be a
gifted learner.
Reflection
1. As a future educator, what is the importance of understanding the nature and
characteristics of gifted and talented learners?
 A child who is gifted still needs guidance to continue to improve their skills
and abilities as a future educator it is important for me to know about this.
Teachers need to be trained on how to teach gifted students because they
learn differently. Not only do they think and learn differently, but their brain
actually develops differently as well. Even though a gifted child may be higher
academically and very creative, their level of emotional and physical
development may be lower than what is expected for their age. A student’s
emotional state is just as important as his or her gifted capacity.

2. How are you going to address the learning needs of the gifted and talented
learners in your classroom? Enumerate your teaching strategies.
 Let students take charge of their learning.
 Honor interests and allow for exploration.
 Involve parents.
 Utilize their talents and interests.
 Familiarize with the Characteristics of Intellectually Gifted Students
