3. REASON
**BEG. REV**
The purpose of this AOT is to inform A320 family operators of two cases of fracture of a MLG Torque
Link Apex Pin in service. It recommends the operators with potentially affected MLG Torque Link Apex
Pin S/N to replace the parts referenced into Appendix 1 and to inspect for crack (Magnetic Particle
Inspection) the parts referenced into Appendix 4.

ALERT OPERATORS TRANSMISSION - AOT
Two cases of MLG Torque Link Apex Pin P/N 201383606 rupture have been reported in service. Failure
of the MLG Torque link Apex pin can lead to disconnection of the MLG Torque Links and damage in the
surrounding area.
The failed MLG Torque Link Apex Pins had respectively accumulated 11687FC and 12430FC and
fractured following development of an undetected crack, on the inside face of the pin head (see below
picture).
Crack area
Figure 1: MLG Torque Link Apex Pin crack area shown with dust cover removed and Apex Pin partly
extracted
3.2 CONSEQUENCES
An undetected crack on the MLG Torque Link Apex Pin could lead to the Pin rupture with the potential
disconnection of the MLG Torque Links.
The two cases of MLG Torque Link Apex Pin rupture led to:
ECAM warnings ‘L/G gear not uplocked’ and ‘L/G Doors not closed’
In Flight Turn Back due to Gears not retracted
Damage in surrounding area
3.3 AIM
**BEG. REV**
The aim of this AOT is to request operators with potentially affected MLG Torque Link Apex Pin S/N to
replace the parts referenced into Appendix 1 and to carry out a NDT inspection of the parts referenced
into Appendix 4 before the end of the compliance time specified in paragraph 4.1.1.

3.4 INVESTIGATION

ALERT OPERATORS TRANSMISSION - AOT
The 2 MLG Torque Link Apex Pins that fractured in service originate from the same manufacturing
batch (12 parts). As a precaution and pending completion of the investigation for the root cause
determination all parts from this batch (12 pins) have been recovered from service. From the retrieved
pins, 5 have been found with cracks on top of the 2 already fractured pins.
Root cause investigations have now established that the cracks originate from the quenching step
during the manufacturing of the pins. It was determined that the crack opened during the quenching
process and was not detected during the subsequent NDT inspection.
The primary root cause for this quench cracking was traced to a too small radius on the rough machining
profile of the pin head. Investigation is still ongoing to determine why these cracks were not detected
during the subsequent NDT after final manufacturing.
**BEG. REV**
Through Revision 00 of this AOT, it was decided to recover batches manufactured immediately before
and after the batches with in-service cracked pins. These batches were considered more likely to have
a risk of quench crack developed during manufacturing process (refer to Appendix 1). Although NDT of
the pin at the end of the manufacturing process should have detected any crack.
The two first retrieved pins from the 48 pins have been inspected and found with cracks.
Considering that the current results of the manufacturing quality investigation have not allowed to
determine why these cracks were not detected during the NDT after final manufacturing, Airbus
recommend as a precaution to inspect all pins manufactured with a too small radius on the rough
machining profile. A total batch of 1940 pins have been identified (refer to Appendix 4).
