1. INTRODUCTION

With increasing population and developments, the cities usually become congested
and mobbed because of which parking problems arise, especially around the commercial
sites. Lahore, however, seems to be very well chucking out parking issues because
enough parking spaces, especially dedicated parking plazas are becoming the fate of the
city.

Lahore stock Exchange parking plaza is centrally located in the heart of city's
prime commercial & business area. It is located on Khayaban-e-Aiwan Iqbal Road which
intersects the Mall Road between Al-Hamra Art Gallery and Avari Hotel. The plaza is
surrounded by the Governor House, The Punjab Assembly, WAPDA House, Aiwan-e-
Iqbal, Holiday Inn Hotel, Flatties, Bagh-e-Jinnah, LSE Plaza is easily accessible through
all type of public transport.

LSE car parking plaza provides the parking for cars as well as motorcycles which
will be the solution of parking problem near the stock exchange.

2. ACTIVITIES PARTICIPATED

Project was running when I reached at the site to do internship almost seventy to
seventy five percent form work of parking plaza had been completed. Working was
continuous on sixth floor columns and also formwork was done when I was at site Steel
work of column continuous. Supervisor told me about earlier work of the project which
includes Foundation works, Underground water tank, and Septic tank, Basement Works,
Ground Floor works and all the Floor which had been completed till now and sixth floor
column work. Sixth Floor column work is remaining so my Internship was about Sixth
Floor column work that was complete during my internship period.

2.1 STEEL &CONCRETE WORK

2.1.1 STEEL WORK
The design of slab was flat slab. The thickness of slab was nine inch because there was no
beam in super structure and six inch slab in sub structure due to beam placed. The beam
size placed in sub structure was (18”x12”).

(Figure: 2.1: Reinforcement in Slab)

5
The Size of column was 2’x2’. The main bars in the column was eight number in dia and
total fourteen bars used. The ties used in the colums was four number in dia and the
spacing was 3@6”c/c. The length of column was ten feet.

(Figure: 2.2: Steel Reinforcement in column and walls)

2.1.2 CONCRETE WORK

The Concrete Composition was 1:1.5:3 which used in columns.

(Table 2.1: Concrete Work Detail)

Materials Units

Cement 7 ft3

Fine Aggregates 11 ft3

Coarse Aggregates 22 ft3

Water 74 ℓ

6
(Figure: 2.3: Concreting Process & Mixer)

Concrete (1:2:4) in slab and (1:1.5:3) in column is used after the completion of
steel work. One lift is used for concreting purposes. Electric vibrators are also used for
compaction of concrete to avoid honey combing and removed voids. Column size was
(2’x2’) in all floors except the ground floor and basement portion, height is 10` and total
concrete is 137m3 is done in sixth floor slab. All the cube and cylinder tested in
Laboratories. After the concreting, process of curing started. A numbers of putson bags
are placed on all sides of the columns for proper curing.

2.2 MY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

My Duties and Responsibilities were to check process of concreting in columns on the

sixth floor. My duties were to check the amount of reinforcement, water/cement ratio of
concrete mixture, quality of building materials, gradation of coarse and fine aggregate,
working of Concrete mixer and other machinery that was working at the site and to check
the brick work which was continue around the boundary walls of plaza.

7
3. ACTIVITIES OBSERVED

Internship period helped me to get first field experience. I observed a lot of activities
regarding our civil engineering where i observe how to steel work is done and fixed, I
also observed the shuttering process, how concrete composition is done in batching plant,
how the curing process of concrete is done in hot weather. I also observed the scaffolding
in the project.

I was working as a trainee with the site engineer, during my internship I observed the
following activities:

3.1 Field Test

The first activity which I observed during my internship period was field test. In this
phase different test were performed to obtain information on the physical properties of
soil and rock around a site to design earthworks and foundations for proposed structures.
In this phase field test like sieve analysis, density of soil (core cutter method) and
moisture (speedy moisture meter) content of the soil was done for the purpose of
designing of foundation.

3.2 Excavation

Site excavation is a process in which soil, rock, and other materials are removed from
a site, typically with the use of heavy earthmoving equipment such as excavators and
bulldozers. In our project excavation was done by the mean of hydraulic excavators. .60 ft
deep excavation was done in order to construct the base floor.

3.3 Earth Compaction

Soil compaction is the process in which a stress applied to a soil causes densification
as air is displaced from the pores between the soil grains. By compaction density of soil
increases and permeability reduces, thereby reducing susceptibility to change in moisture

8
content Compaction of the disturb soil is necessary for constructing the base of the
foundation. Earth Compacter was used for this purpose. Machine consists of a heavy

vibrator and tamping plate beneath the vibrator. This machine was manually operated.
All soil was compacted for this purpose.

3.4 Levelling

Levelling was done after compaction of the area at which foundation had to be laid.
For this purpose theodolite was used. Moreover, vertical and horizontal alignment of the
structure was monitored by theodolite during execution of the project.

3.5 Termite Proofing:

Termite damages wood and losses are in billions of Rupees per year. Termite is found
in all structures build by human beings .They live underneath the soil and comes up in
search of food. Termite damages all objects other than made-up of metal i.e. furniture,
fixture, carpets, currency, documents, cloths etc.

Two types of termite proofing was used:

 Pre-Construction Termite Proofing

 Post Construction Termite Proofing

After excavation, chemical was sprayed on the entire area of the site by the means of
hand pump. Biflex termite proofing chemical was used on the site, is the product of FMC
(Food Machinery Cooperation). Chemical was in liquid form. It was mixed with water
and sprayed on the excavated area with the help of hand sprayer tank having a capacity of
30 liters.

3.6 Safety

During my internship period I had seen the safety measures were taken strictly to
avoid the accidents. Safety helmets were provided for head protection. Safety boots were
provided for firm grip and to avoid crush injuries to toes and injuries to striking against
9
the objects. Safety gloves were provided to those who were involved in handling cement
and concrete and carrying cutting, grinding and wielding works.

3.7 CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL

We used some material for the construction which were Port land Cement (Maple
Leaf), Sand (Chenab), Coarse Aggregates (Margla Crush), Steel (40 & 60 Grade)

3.8 SOLDIER PILLING

I saw the soldier pilling first time. It was necessary when we excavated the soil fifty
feet down for plaza bed it may be dangerous for nearby buildings so we provide soldier
pilling (dia. 2’), length sixty eight feet and also provide anchor beam after each ten feet
for locking the horizontal movement of soldier pilling.

(Figure: 3.1: Soldier Pilling & Anchor Beam)

10
3.9 BRICK WORK

Brick work was done by a labor which was difficult to do in such a condition
when temperature was too high. I saw the brick work in the boundary wall consist of
plinth beam, copping beam and column. The distance between two adjacent columns was
8 feet and copping beam (4#4) was rest on the two adjacent columns. The height of the
wall was eight feet.. The column size used in wall was (1’x1’) and height eight feet. The
bond was Stretcher bond.

(Figure: 3.2: Brick Work in Boundary Wall)

11
(Figure: 3.3: BRICKS)

4. CORRELATION OF ACTIVITIES WITH STANDARDS

We used many of the standard specifications for the testing of building materials and
in this project we checked standard ASTM tests for coarse aggregate and fine aggregate.
We also checked the slump value of concrete and its compressive strength value. At the
end we did steel tension test to check the tensile strength of steel.

5. DIFFICULTIES AND PROBLEMS FACED

During Internship period, I faced some difficulties and problems:

 There was no proper testing facility at site.
 Difficulty in studying the structural drawings due to their complexity.
 Rainfall also affected the progress of project especially when the concreting in
process.
 Main problem was to work during night shift which was difficult when load
shedding occurred.
 Labors use local language which was difficult to understand.
 Due to less communication skills I could not understand some tools name in local
language.
 There was too high temperature at site from 40°C to 46°C.

 Formwork was not too good.

 There is a difference between office work and site work.

 Site Engineer come to site after 3 or 4 days just for 1 hour.

 You can’t find a site Engineer to help you easily.

 The stirrups in the beams were not placed at proper distance as mentioned in the
drawing.

 The ties in columns were not placed proper distance as mentioned in the drawings.

 Column was not in alignment and little bit tilted.

 There was also a difficulty in placing the material used in construction such as
steel bars, aggregates, bricks etc.

13
6. SUMMARY AND KNOWLEDGE GAINED

This experience was very helpful for me in my further studies and my practical life.
Internship is the easiest way where a student can get the practical knowledge of his
studies. In our course we study different topics but at internship its best opportunity to get
experience about these topics in a practical way so this internship gave me a lot of
experience in every field of our study.

Internship includes the planning process, identifying specific task, scheduling and
designating responsibilities within the team. Getting experience is a great way to build
your confidence.

I gained the valuable knowledge which is described as:

 I learnt about the punctuality of time and how it plays important role in field.
 I learnt about team work management.
