ARTS

Fine art and Applied Art

In European academic traditions, fine art is art developed primarily for aesthetics or beauty,
distinguishing it from applied art, which also has to serve some practical function, such as pottery or
most metalwork.
The arts can encompass a great variety of activity, performing arts (which include dance,
theatre, opera and music) literary arts, culinary arts, and of course the visual arts, which might hold
the greatest variety from sculpture to photography to oil paints, and everything in between.
Arts and Culture
The thing people often get confused is the difference between the arts and culture. Culture is
everything about how we live…..our common values, how we earn a living, how we celebrate, the food
we eat, everything that make Canadians Canadian, Brits Brit, Scots Scot and Albanians Albanian. The
arts are how we express our culture. The visual arts are often influenced by local geography, the books
reflect the author’s reality….and so on.
Music
Music is an art form. People argue endlessly about which music is art and which is schlock, but
no one has a definitive definition because it’s purely a matter of personal taste. The kind of music we
like depends on what kind of person you are. Some people think only classical music qualifies while
others think other genres rule the airwaves.
Visual Arts
The visual arts are art forms such as sculpture, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking,
stained glass designs. Sub classifications include charcoal, pen and ink, watercolors, acrylics, miniature
painting, engraving, lithography. Also included within the visual arts are the applied arts such as
ceramics, wood carving, tapestry, woodworking, metal working, paper-folding (origami), industrial
design, graphic design, fashion design, interiors design and decorative art. Some different types of art
are photography, video, filmmaking and architecture, dance, and acting.

The answer to the question “what is art?” is emphasized by Goethe who said: “Art is where
you find it. A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life,
in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has imp lanted in the
human soul.”
