Narrative Report on District Echo Seminar-Workshop on Literacy


Instruction in English
The Department of Education through the Bureau of Learning Delivery- Teaching and
Learning (BLD) conducted National Training on Literacy Instruction to respond to the need
for strengthened advocacy for literacy. It focuses on the development of literacy as a potent
tool for across the curriculum. As an implementation, the Bunawan District II in coordination
with West Bunawan Central Elementary School conducted the 5-day District Echo Seminar-
Workshop on Literacy Instruction in English from February 8 to 12, 2021 at West Bunawan
Central Elementary School, Poblacion, Bunawan, Agusan del Sur. The Session was headed
by the Principal of WEBCES, Sir Reynald A. Subingsubing and was facilitated by 4 teachers
namely Ma’am Gina P. Ayala, Ma’am Ginalyn D. Dicang, Ma’am Paralona T. Largo and Ma’am
Melyn L. Dadivas. The District Echo Seminar-Workshop was participated by 32 teachers
including the ALS Learning Facilitators and Volunteer Teachers.

The first day of the seminar-workshop started with an opening program that was
hosted by Ma’am Gina P. Ayala. The participants were warmly welcomed by Ma’am Juliet P.
Balolot, Master Teacher I and were acknowledged by Ma’am Catherine V. Dramayo through
a simple activity about literacy. Ma’am Ginalyn D. Dicang, Master Teacher I, stated the
purpose of the Echo Seminar and an inspirational message was given by Sir Reynald A.
Subingsubing. Before finally starting the session proper, Training Protocols and safety
measures to prevent transmission of COVID-19 was reminded by Ma’am Paralona T. Largo.

The Echo Seminar started with Session 1 entitled “The Nature of Reading” that was
facilitated by Ma’am Ginalyn D. Dicang. It was followed by Session 2 with the topic “Building
Communicative Competence through Oral Language Instruction” that was delivered by
Ma’am Paraluna T. Largo. After noon break, the learning session resumed and continued to
Session 3-Raising Learners Phonological Awareness as Foundation skill to Decoding that was
discussed by Ma’am Gina P. Ayala. The last session for the first day was Session 4- Teaching
Phonic and Word Recognition for Successful Decoding Skills that was facilitated by Ma’am
Melyn L. Dadivas. The teachers actively participated in the different activities brought by the
facilitators and answered the learning tasks in every session.

The second day started with Management of Learning (MOL) which was led by
Kindergarten Teachers. After recuperating the activities from the previous day, Session 5 in
English with the topic “Direct Fluency Instruction for Developing Independent Readers” was
then discussed by Ma’am Ginalyn D. Dicang. It was followed by Session 6 which discussed
about Employing vocabulary Instruction for effective word structure and meaning
recognition that was delivered by Ma’am Paraluna T. Largo. For afternoon session, the
topics were Session 7-Can you read? Making Inferences and Predicting Outcomes and
Session 8- Hunting for the Nitty Gritty: Noting Significant Details and Textual Evidence
through Close Reading.
On the third day of the training, the Grade 1 Teachers led the Management of
Learning (MOL) before starting the learning sessions. Ma’am Ginalyn D. Dicang started the
seminar-workshop with Session 9- What Feeling Within? Inferring General Mode and Tone of
the selection. Two topics were discussed in the afternoon session, these were Session 10-
Are you linked? Determining the cause and effect relationships and Session 11- What’s the
big Picture? Getting the main idea/theme of the selection. Before ending the day’s seminar,
the facilitators gave task sheets to the participants for their assignments.

The Grade 2 Teachers led the Management of Learning (MOL) in the fourth day of
Echo-Seminar Workshop. After the preliminaries and reviewing the activities from the
previous day, the learning session started. The topics discussed in the morning were Session
12-Make it in order: The what and how of sequencing of events and Session 13: Is it a fact
or Bluff: Distinguishing Facts from Opinion. In the afternoon, the last session was discussed
by Ma’am Gina P. Ayala entitled “Picture in out: Drawing Conclusions and Making
Generalizations of the Selection”. The participants shared their insights in the different topics
and participated in the learning activities. The Task Sheets were also answered and
collected by the facilitators as an evidence for learning in the Echo Seminar-Workshop on
Literacy Instruction in English.

The last day of the Echo-Seminar Workshop was formally ended by a Closing
Program that was hosted by Ma’am Ginalyn D. Dicang. The Opening prayer was led by
Ma’am Amor S. Ayala followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Ma’am Clear Joy A.
Añasco, one of the teacher participants gave her Impression for the Echo Seminar-
Workshop. The District In-Charge of Bunawan District II, Sir Bartolome M. Pongasi inspired
the participants by his words of challenge and motivated them to become more competitive
teachers that will help eradicate illiteracy. Ma’am Fe Y. Murrillo, a teacher participant, also
gave her impression and over all learnings for the whole Literacy Seminar. It was then
followed by the giving of certificates to the participants as well as to the facilitators. Finally,
Sir Reynald A. Subingsubing, as the head of the Learning Session gave his closing remarks
by expressing his heartfelt gratitude towards the participants and individuals that made the
training successful. The Program was then ended with a closing prayer that was given by
Ma’am Janeth Joey P. Montejo.
