Introduction

DMAIC is a data-driven problem-solving approach that helps make incremental

improvements and optimizations to products, designs and business processes. It was
created in the 1980s as part of the Six Sigma methodology by Motorola engineer Bill
Smith. The Six Sigma approach was designed to drive continuous improvement in
manufacturing processes using data and statistics.

In phase A, which is the phase the document is going to be about. The focus here is to
identify the root cause of the problem. Usually when analyzing a process several
possible root causes are identified, but the key to the success of this step is to prioritize
and validate the root cause of the problem to be addressed. As a result of this step, it is
expected that opportunities for improvement are created. Using the 5 Whys is an
interesting approach to assist you in identifying and validating the root cause.

We should have a baseline of data that you can use to start making decisions about the
process. As you might expect, the Analyze phase is the perfect time to review that data.
Here, team members will develop a current process map using the data to understand
where problems begin in the process. Although some Six Sigma projects use more
complicated tools for this, fishtail diagrams and Pareto charts are perfectly sufficient
methods and are often used to perform root cause analysis. Once several root causes
have been identified, it is time to include the team. A voting process is done to decide
where the DMAIC process approach should move forward.

Chapter 2. Theoretical Framework

DMAIC Cycle, Phase A.

Considering the measurements of the critical quality variables and having a good
understanding of the operating characteristics of the process, we move on to the next
stage of the DMAIC cycle called Analyze.

At this point we must examine the data we have observed in order to identify and
confirm the root causes of our problem. In other words, the Analyze stage allows us to
understand how and why failures are generated until we get to their deepest causes or
roots, confirmed with data.

This is where it should be clear that the essence of a project of this nature is to attack
the causes that really cause the problem and not to waste time and valuable resources
in addressing "symptoms", which generates temporary solutions, with the problem
resurfacing after a while.

On more than one occasion, once the data have been analyzed, the project may have
to be reformulated, since aspects not initially considered may arise and may even mean
its redefinition.

This step is key, since the following phases are usually the most costly and labor-
intensive. And, of course, it would be unfortunate to waste resources (not only
economic) in a project that does not yield the expected results.

In addition, the correct identification of what actually needs to be improved is key in a

process improvement project

Chapter 3. Conclusion

It can be concluded that by applying the analysis phase in our projects, we achieve an
improvement that verifies the work done through the proposals for action and the
realization of these proposals. The proposed solution is designed, tested and
implemented.

When we implement solutions, we can make a new stakeholder analysis, a business

case and a risk assessment, as well as a calculation of the new capacity and sigma of
the project processes.

I could say that this methodology can be applied in any industry and any process. We
will be able to correct the process at the right time and always obtain good results from
our work.
