DMAIC

DMAIC is a powerful tool in the Lean Six Sigma toolkit because it represents a framework
within which Lean SIx Sigma projects are executed. It defines the five major steps followed
by any project and guides a team through these stages to ensure a logical and thorough
approach to studying, evaluating and improving process flow. Complete the template in the
next spreadsheet by entering the information suggested below.

Define
Identify the target process. Specify the exact nature of the problem. Describe the problem in
writing. Summarize the Voice of the Customer. What is wrong and how can the problem be
solved?

Measure
Identify the inputs, outputs and process parameters. How can they be measured? Estimate
the gap between the old system and the proposed system. Make every effort to use
quantitative measures as this will clarify exactly how much the situation will improve.

Analyze
Explore the causes of the problem. Find its root cause. What tools such as SIPOC diagrams
and Flow Charts would prove useful in guiding the efforts to systematically make sense of the
data that has been collected.

Improve
Identify as many solutions as possible. Engage in brainstorming sessions. Choose the solution
that is easiest to implement and one that is more likely to be accepted by those responsible
for the operational process. Create an implementation plan.

Control
Create a control plan that identifies where in the process control points will be needed. How
will control charts be used to assure that the process delivers the desired results? Document
the results.
