In the second pasuram, Andal describes how to
perform the Paavai Nombu, to attain the "Parkadalil
Paiya thuyindra paraman" the ultimate lord. She
says that they will refrain from taking milk, ghee,
wearing eye makeup, and flowers. They will refrain
from doing the wrong deeds (described in the
cartoon as cutting trees unnecessarily, as an
example) and speaking ill of others. While they will
sing in the praise of the lord, they will be waking up
before sunrise and taking bath, helping people and
promoting charity. Contemplating fair means of
achieving a goal and thus feeling contented about it
is yet another thing that is to be done.

In this pasuram, Andal speaks about the benefits
of observing the paavai noombu. She says, if we
sing in praise of the "oongi ulagalantha uthaman"
(The one who measured the world and the sky
with his mere two steps and the third one on
Mahabali's head) , and observe this nombu, the
following things will happen. There will be good
rains in the country and there will be no harm at
all (like flood, drought). The living beings will be
so happy and relaxed that the fish will circle and
play amidst the paddy crops, the bugs will sleep
peacefully in the "Kuvalai" flower aka blue lotus.
and the cows will be so generous that they will
milk and fill vessels with milk by themselves..
There will be prosperity all over.

In this pasuram, Andal requests “Varuna” the lord
of rain to not make his gift small. She asks him to
go deep inside the sea, collect the excess water and
give us good rains (Andal explained evaporation in
her pasurams back then). She says that the sky
should darken as the colour of “ஊழி முதல் வன்
(Oozhi Mudhalvan) ” the one who operates the world
– Narayana. She says that there should be
lightnings like the lusture of the discus in the hands
of lord pandmanabhan with broad shoulders, and
thunder like the sound of his conch.
The Rain drops should be like the shower of arrows
from his divine bow “Sarang”. The beauty of this
pasuram is that, Andal asks lord varuna to give
rains so that people can live comfortably and that
there should be no excess rains destroying crops
and causing floods. So she says “வாழ உலகினில்
பெய் திடாய் (Vazha ulaginil peithidai)”. Then we
can all take ceremonial bath during marghazi month
and thus stay happy.

In this pasuram, Andal tells about the effects of
worshiping Krishna. She describes him as the one
who is a mysterious one, the young boy of
Mathura, one who resides on the bank of the holy
river the Yamuna, one who is like a shining lamp in
the race of cowherds (Aayarkulam), one who
sanctified the womb of Devaki and one who is
called as Damodaran (as he was tied with a rope by
Yashoda). so if we worship Him with a pure heart,
by words of mouth and think of him in our mind,
our sins will vanish like a grass put on fire.
In the first five pasurams, Andal introduces
Krishna, his parents, and the Aayarchirumiyar.
She also tells about the greatness of Krishna and
the ways of performing the Paavai NOombu and
its benefits. In the next ten Pasurams, Andal
goes to every household and awakens the girls of
the Neighborhood to join her in this Nombu.

In the 6th pasuram, Andal goes to her friend's house and
describes the scenery outside. She says the birds have
started chirping, and the conch sound from the temple of
Krishna (who killed the demon who came like a bird). Andal
asks her if she is not hearing these sounds. Andal says,
"Wake up my dear girl. The Yogi's and sages have come to
meditate on the Lord who is the cause of the universe and
sleeps on the Adhiseshan in yoga nidra on the Milky ocean.
He was the one who killed the demon Bhoothaki who came
to poison him through her breast milk, and the demon who
came in the form of a cart by shattering him into pieces
with his small foot. The yogi's upon meditation are chanting
the name "Hari". That name enters our ears and our heart
and pleases us. Does that not happen to you? Please wake
up and join us in this nombu".

churning of the curd by the gopikas and the synchronized
sound of their churning rods? Don't you get the fragrance
of the flowers that are adorning their well-combed hair?
In addition to the sound of the churning rod, their bangles
and other jewelry are also moving to create a beautiful
sound. " Andal continues, " how can u sleep away even after
listening to us singing in praise of Lord Narayana and his
other namams kesava (now who killed the demon kesi)?
Please come and open the door so that we can all sing in

"ககாதுகலமுடடய (Kodhukalamudayai)" meaning
the most enthusiastic one. She says, " Hey!, The
eastern sky is whitening and the buffalos have
already come to graze the grasses. We have
retained those who were planning to go and
perform the viratham so that you can join us. so
please wake up to sing in praise of the lord who
killed the demon Kesi (In Tamil Ma means horse, so
andal refers to this incident as மாவாய்
பிளந்தாடன (Ma vai Pilandhanai)) and who killed
the wrestlers in Kamsa's court.
So if we go and surrender ourselves to the lord of
all devas (கதவாதி கதவடன (Devathidevanai)),
he will enquire about our problems and give us a
suitable blessing. So please wake up and join us".
Here in this pasuram, the term "ஆராய் ந்து
அருள் (Aarainthu arul) " is used which means that
the lord will not just give whatever we ask for. He
will think and see if it will be good for us in the
future and only then he will bless us with that. So
even if we seek something without knowing its
future repercussions, he will take care and bless us
all accordingly.

tired, or being cursed by a long spell of sleep? In order to
wake her up let us all recite the names of Narayana;
Mahamayan (one with supreme magical powers). Madhavan
(The lord of Mahalakshmi) and Vaikunthan (now who resides
in Vaikuntam). This pasuram tells about the importance of
reciting the names of Lord Narayana (Sahasranamam). This
will increase our devotion, bring all-round happiness, and
wards off evil deeds. In this pasuram, sleeping is signified
as being ignorant, and being dumb and deaf are signified as
not reciting or listening to his sahasranamam.

when we all have come to call you. Let's all sing in praise
of Narayana who is adorning the Tulasi garland on his
head and he will bless us all with the drums (here it is
signified as the Fruits of the vratham). Has Kumbakarna
who was in a long spell of sleep transferred his sleep to
you after getting defeated by lord Ramachandra? Oh,
girl who is overpowered by a heavy dose of sleep, you are
still a jewel in our group, hence come and open the door
for us and join us in the Vratham". This pasuram tells
about the importance of Tulsi to Narayana. The Tulsi
plant came to the world when the milk ocean was churned
and it has always been a part of worship of Lord
Narayana.

goes on to wake up another girl of their group who is very
beautiful, and her family is known for being sincere with
their duties. In sashtras, it is said that performing one's
duties sincerely, is equal to service to god so, the lord will be
pleased with them and grant them their wishes. Thus Andal
says " Oh friend! you are very charming like a peacock and
beautiful like a creeper. your hip is like the hood of a cobra.
You come from a family whose members are blemishless,
very sincere, and skilled in milking young cows at a stretch
and skilled in warfare that they can destroy even strong
opponents. The friends of the neighborhood have come to
your house to sing in praise of the Lord who is in the colour
of clouds (Krishna). What is the reason for your sleep
without even responding or moving to our calls?". Thus Andal
through this pasuram says about the significance of
performing one's duties sincerely.

ககாவிந்தா (Koodarai vellum seergovindha) is a very
important pasuram of thiruppavai. Andal started the
Paavai nombu and the rules of the paavai nombu were
stated in the 2nd pasuram. Till today they did not wear
ornaments, flowers, they refrained from eating milk and
ghee. This day marks the end of the paavai nombu.
Hence Andal says, " Oh! Lord Govindha who wins over his
opponents, when we sing in praise of you we will get a
good result and glory of all the worlds. Hence we wear
the bracelet, shoulder ornament, earrings, golden
flowers, and anklets. Then we will cook rice in milk and
make Sakkaraipongal which has so much ghee in it that
when someone takes it in their hand, the ghee drips up to
the elbow. We will all be united and happy with your
blessings.

In the previous pasurams, Andal was seeking his blessings
and requesting him to fulfill their wishes. But in this
pasuram, Andal wishes to stay with the lord and do service
to him as the boon. In the 29th pasuram (Sitramsirukalai)
சிற் றம் சிறு காகல She says ", We have come in the
dawn and we bow down to your lotus feet. Listen to our
purpose of doing this. You were born in the cowherd clan
who earn their livelihood by grazing and rearing the herd
of cattle. We were also born in that clan and you are one
among us. You cannot deny our service to you. We not only
desire the drums and boons from you but we also want to
be the kith and kin of you throughout our seven births and
do service to you. We want to be with you always. Please
free us of all the desires".
Throughout this month of Margazhi, we enjoyed
the various aspects of bhakthi through the
thiruppavai verses and we got to know about the
greatness of sriman narayana. This pasuram tells
about the benefits of reciting thiruppavai.

garland with lot of love and bhakthi for Krishna.
This garland is the thiruppavai which is
composed in sanga thamizh with the 30
pasurams as the flowers. Andal continues," The
effect of the viratham is not only for the
aayarpadi girls who were participating in it, but
also for those who recite these pasurams with
dedication and faith. The lord who has four
strong mountain like shoulders and red lotus
like eyes, will bless them with all their wishes
and they will live a prosperous life".
Andal came to this world to show us
the Bhakthi margam (path of
bhakthi) to reach god. She proved
that in order to get lord narayana's
blessings and affection we just need
to surrender ourself with a pure
heart to him and nothing else.
