In this Sewing For Fun Packet are the directions for making the different projects. They are
organized from simple to more difficult. Make at least four of the items. How many more you
make will depend on your sewing skill. In this packet you will find the directions for making
various items. Each project tells you what supplies you will need and what sewing skills you will
learn. Check off each step as you complete it. Be sure to look at the drawings. They will help you
to put your project together.
Have an enjoyable and fun time making these projects. Remember Practice Makes Perfect!

Supplies Needed:
Felt or firmly woven wool fabric scraps.
Matching or contrasting thread.
You may make your needlebook all one col-
or or in contrasting colors. (Examples , red,
yellow, and blue or blue, blue green, and 4" 3"
green.)
Step 1. Cut 3 felt or wool pieces the same 6" 5"
shape, each piece slightly smaller
than the one before. Sizes are 6" x
4"; 5" x 3" ; 4" x 2". Make 3 card-
board patterns to size and trace
around the fabric using chalk or STEP I
water-erasable pen. You may use
pinking shears when cutting for a
decorative edge.

Supplies Needed:
3/ 8 yd. firm , durable fabric 44-45" wide (such
:iS denim, sailcloth, trigger, or poplin).
Fold
3/ 8 yd. lightweight cotton or cotton blend for
inner bag.
See page 15 in your member manual on Grain
Perfect Fabric.
Step 1. Using the pattern cut two pieces of
fabric with upper portion of handle
on fold of fabric. These pieces are
your outer and inner bags.
Step 2. With right sides together, stitch in- Selvage

Step 3. Trim seam to 1/ 4" and clip curve.

Press seam open before turning.
Step 4. Turn bag right side out by pulling
fabric through handle.
Step 5. Bring right sides of inner bag to-
gether and right sides of outer bag
together to form a rectangle. Pin in
place.
Step 6. Stitch around rectangle using a STEP 3
112" seam allowance. Leave a small
opening in inner bag (4-6") on the
side. Trim corners diagonally. Press Right Side
seams open.
Step 7. Reach into opening of the inner bag
and pull handle through opening.
Finish opening in inner bag with a
slip stitch, or overhand stitch.
Strape handle can be topstitched if
desired to keep edges in place.
Step 8. Turn bag so inner bag is inside.
Press.
Optional- Decorate outer bag. Applique a
design. Do this before Step 2. STEP 6

Step 7. Cut ribbon in half. Mark center of

ribbon. Hand or machine stitch on
seamline near edge of bag. Tie bows.
Hand stitch bows so they won't
come untied.
Now your favorite doll or stuffed animal
has its very own sleeping bag. STEP 7
The leftover fabric may be used to make a
smaller bag using these directions.

Sewing Skills You Will Learn
1. Measure and tear or cut fabric to size.
2. Make a 1/ 4" hem.
3. Stitch 5/ 8" seam allowances.
4. Zigzag seam edges.
5. Insert zipper.
6. Press seams.
7. Join straight and curved edges together.
8. Trim corners.

Step 2. To match circle end pieces to the

half lengthwise then crosswise.

with a marking pen.
Step 10. Locate starting dot and sew a 5/8" STEPS 9-10
seam allowance to the other dot.
Sew carefully around the curves!
Backstitch at beginning and end of
seamline. DO NOT sew over pins.
Remove them as you come to them.
