OT Complex Design:

FUNCTIONAL AREAS OF OT Complex:

- Reception and waiting areas for the patient’s attendant (Adjacent to main OT area)
- Patient briefing/ Counseling room (Adjacent to main OT area)

The above facilities should be adjacent to main OT complex. The below mentioned
functional areas should be inside the main OT Complex.
- Entrance area (with shoe rack facilities)
- Change room (Male and Female)
- Toilet, Bath room/Shower and Locker (Male and Female)
- Pre-Op (Paper work/Vitals/Surgical mark etc.)
- Induction/Anesthesia room
- Main OT
- Post-Op (Recovery/Observation)
- Doctors room/Sleeping rooms
- Surgeons room
- Nursing supervisors and OT Manager’s room
- Hand washing bays
- Space for Clean and Dirty utilities
- Staff Lounge/Dining Facilities
- Consultants Room
- Sub Sterile Room (separate room beside OT)
- OT Equipment space
- Consumables space
- Scrub up rooms
- Blood Store
- Cleaners Rooms
- Flash Sterilizers area
- Pathology area for frozen sections
- Store rooms and storage areas for Anesthetic supplies, Drugs, Equipment,
- Perfusion Equipment for Cardiac surgeries (Cardiac OT)
- Exit Bays
These are some following points which need to be incorporated in the light of establishing an OT
complex.
1. Cath Lab, Radial Lounge, Cardio thoracic OT, CCU, CTVS, step down should be in one floor
with Cardiac unit. There should be connection/passage between Cath Lab to CT OT
2. Neurosurgery OT, Orthopedic OT, Cardio thoracic OT and Vascular surgery OT need to be
accommodated in hybrid OT.
3. DUAL corridor is preferable. The aim is to separate dirty utilities from clean materials by
controlling the uses of each corridor. There must not be cross traffic of staff and supplies
from the decontaminated soiled areas to the sterile / clean areas.
4. Sterile equipment from CSSD should come through separate path to OT (via elevator), that
is why Separate connection from CSSD to OT is preferable.
