To allow your development to proceed you must choose

an appropriate site. Using the criteria defined during the

Identification of the Brief, you should assess 3 sites
across the University as potential sites. For each of the
criteria you have determined in Weeks 1 and 2 that a
good site should have you should grade each of your
potential sites between 1 (poor) and 5 (excellent) for
each category. Using your critical thinking skills, prepare
1500 words plus diagrams to justify your site selection
over the other sites.

Is your site flat or sloping – topographical maps will tell you. Some

Soil properties of your site
What are the ground conditions of your site? Is the soil
strong enough to support your construction? Thanks to
unrenewable resource extraction, the UK has a mapping
database of what the ground is like beneath our feet (and
beyond). The British Geographical Survey (B.G.S.) is the key
holder to this information.

Different map layers reveal what is going on at different
depths underground. Superficial is near the surface (shallow
foundations) and bedrock is lower down (piled foundations)
The B.G.S. also is a depository of wiki-borehole logs in the UK. Is
there one near your proposed site?
Flooding risk of your site
There is a full set of maps which highlight whether flooding might
be an issue for your site. Flooding may be caused by excessive
surface water, rivers bursting their banks or other means. All maps
for Salford are available here – you need to find the right one.

Ground gases near your site
Gases such as Radon may poison occupiers by rising up through the
ground and collecting within rooms of buildings –
check to see whether this may be an issue for your site here:
