6- When the angle between the electric field lines and the normal is 60o. The electric flux is
(a) EA (b) Zero (c) EAcosθ θ (d) None of these
7- The earth’s geographic north pole is magnetically
(a) South pole (b) North pole (c) West pole (d) East pole
8- The magnetic force on the current carrying conductor is given by
(a) q ν⃗B⃗ sinθ (b) I L⃗. B⃗ sinθ (c) I L⃗. B⃗ (d) None of these

Part II: (6 marks)

1. Compare between the magnetic and electric fields

Electric field Magnetic field
Definition The region around the electric charge The region around a moving charge
Unit N/C Tesla
Expression E = F/qo B = FB / (q ν sin θ)

2. Show that, the electric flux is zero when the electric field lines are parallel to the surface
Solution
When the electric field lines are parallel to the surface that means the lines are perpendicular to the normal θ = 900
ФE = EA cos θ = EA cos 90 = 0

Part III: Answer each of the following questions (show required steps clearly) (15 marks)

Q1
A cube of 60 cm each side length is placed in a region in which the electric field is given by
E⃗ = 5 ax - 4 ay + 3 az (N/C). Calculate the electric flux of the shaded face in yz plane of the cube.
Solution
 E⃗ = 5 ax - 4 ay + 3 az (N/C)
 A = 0.6 × 0.6 = 0.36 m2 ⟹ A⃗ = 0.36 ax (m2) yz plane
ФE = E⃗ . A⃗ = (5 ax - 4 ay + 3 az) . 0.36 ax = 1.8 N.m2/C

Q2
A solid sphere of a radius 40 cm has a total positive charge 26 µC uniformly distributed through its
volume, Calculate the electric flux at 40 cm
Solution
 Q = 26 µC = 26 ×10-6 C , a = 40 cm = 0.4 m.
 r = 40 cm = 0.4 m , Since r = a outside
×
E = Ke = 9 ×109 × = 1462.5×103 N/C
.

A = 4πr2 = 4π×0.42 = 2.0106 m2 (area of the sphere)

ФE = EA (filed lines perpendicular to sphere surface at each point)
ФE = EA= 1462.5×103 × 2.0106 = 2940.5 ×103 N.m2/C

Q3
An electron moves at a speed of 106 m/s at +z direction in a uniform magnetic field of magnitude of 0.3 T in +x
direction. Calculate the magnitude and the direction of the magnetic force on the electron.
Solution
 q (electron) = - 1.6×10 -19 C , B = 0.3 T, ν = 10 6 m/s , θ = 90o (between z and x axis)
FB = qνB sin θ = 1.6 ×10 -19 × 10 6 × 0.3 × sin 90 = 4.8 ×10 -14 N ( in - y direction)

Q4
A wire 2.8 m in length carries a current of 5 A in a region where a uniform magnetic field has a magnitude
of 3.9 T. Calculate the magnitude of the magnetic force on the wire assuming the angle between the
magnetic field and the current is 30°
Solution

 L = 2.8 m, I = 5 A, B = 3.9 T, θ = 30o

FB = ILB sin θ = 5 * 2.8 * 3.9 * sin 30 = 27.3 N
