Presentation Title: Working with poverty

Presentation Focus: Nursing Across the World

School: First year veterinary student at Kharkiv  State Zooveterinary Academy and former
Technician at National Institute of Horses DAR ESSALAM

The majority of the equid population remains working animals. The number of these
working equids is estimated at 1.5million in Morocco. That means they play an integral role in
sustaining human livelihoods . However, Their contribution is largely overlookd. It highlights how it
helps to fulfill the sustainable development goals. For this reason, taking care of a working equid is
accepting the responsibility for the owner’s subsistence. To put it differently, the loss of 1 of these
creatures means financial ruin for the whole family. That’s why, providing free care is a critical
service in this community. So, Throughout my experience as a veterinary technician at the American
Foundouk and as a student at Kharkiv State Zooveterinary Academy, I have developed a deep
understanding of the link between the welfare of working animals and sustainable human livelihoods.
On the basis of this, I will be discussing my role, responsibility, and reflecting upon my practice :

 Nurse care : Providing the necessary care for the hospitalized animal including patient
monitoring and health check, feeding , grooming and walking animal .

 Medication : Administering treatments including injections, tablets, fluids, and blood

transfusions.

 Dental care : Maintaining the health of the in-patient continually growing teeth and correct
problems that lead to inadequate nutrition and poor performance.

 Surgery Theatre : Successful surgical operation also depend on the critical role of preparing
the theatre , administring anesthetics , clipping and scrubbing including assisting vets in
surgery’s 2 or 3 per week ( Hernia, Flexor limb deformity, Feloctomy’s, Ennucleation, and
Abdominal wall rupture ) so that the owner can ensure the continuation of the productive
benefit.
 The diagnosis equipment : Maintenance and management of the diagnosis equipment as a
digital radiography, an ultrasound, the endoscope, and gastroscope.
 Intensive care : Providing an intensive care for the patient such as neonatal foal, colics, and
tetanus.

 Client communicator : Communicating with owners, gaining their trust and reassuring them
about their animal's treatment is a hard job sometimes especially when it comes to explaining
a dark diagnosis or euthanasia reasons.
 Education : Organizing an education day for the owners to persuade them of the
consequences of common cases faced in the hospital such as (tetanus , septic arthiritis , ill-
treatement , rope injury’s … )

To conclude, the purpose of this paper is to clarify the harsh reality of the working equids
in relation to the the important role that we play in combating the poverty faced by the owners
and our contribution to make the life of these creatures in a better condition by replacing an old or
dead mule by a young on. For this reason, recently the American Fondouk established a new
stables that suits a confortable life for the working equids in Medina of Fez.
