Self-Test
The most important nature of mathematics is its relevance to a broad spectrum of human
concerns. Answer the following items.

1. Explain why mathematics is necessary in your chosen course. Give specific instances
(minimum of 150 words)
The doctor's and nurses' workloads revolve in the world of sciences. We assumed that
only clinical procedures, treatments, medications, anatomy, and physiology had to be learned by
nurses, doctors, and other health care professionals. However, the truth is that mathematics is
incorporated into the day-to-day lives of health care professionals.
In hospital settings, mathematics is a language of communication commonly used
between health care professionals. Nurses must ensure that patients receive their medication at
the required dosage. Administering an inappropriate dosage suggests that a patient will have
significant consequences or die and that the nurse will lose her job. Nurses measure how much
medicine a patient should be given using math formulas. These require oral medications, IVs,
injectables, and ointments. Based on the dosage and how much the patient needs, nurses use
mathematics to determine how much medicine to give. To ensure that the amount of medication
is adequate and that patients do not receive too little or too much, nurses use math. When
anyone's life is on the line, a guess or approximation is not good enough.
Math is a crucial player in the healthcare arena. Because people's lives are involved, their
mathematical equations must be correct for nurses and doctors. Numbers will give physicians,
nurses, and especially patients the information they need to get better.
2. What role is played by mathematics in the following areas (Answer in not more than 5
sentences)?
a. Music
The closest link between music and math, perhaps, is that they both use patterns.
Musicians depend on numbers so that they will come up in making a precise measure of
beats to their songs. In studying patterns, mathematics, and various mathematical
viewpoints, you can explore everything in music, including geometry, number theory,
trigonometry, differential calculus, and signal processing.

b. Economics
Economics uses mathematics as a language to model economic phenomena. It
forces an individual to be very explicit about often unrealistic assumptions and prove
results. Numbers justify big data and cleared judgments and present precise predictions to
uncertainties.

c. Digital Media
Mathematics made technology innovative and making investments to deliver
digital audio, image and video information to consumers and customers. New
infrastructure of digital media, on-line services and electronic commerce is rapidly being
developed, all thanks to the use of mathematics. The mathematical disciplines aquire
new and unexpected applications points new problems requiring solutions, which
stimulate new developments in digital media.

d. Health
Mathematics help predicts more manageable tasks. The numeracy skills that
would seem to be necessary for everyday life tasks such as informed medical decision-
making significantly impact good health outcomes, less accurate perception of health
risks, and a compromised ability to make medical decisions. Math helps professionals
decide how often patients need to take their medication to keep a sufficient amount of
medicine in the body. Numbers are a way of communicating information, which is very
important in the medical field.
