CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
This chapter responds to the problem's statement. It also includes some conclusions reached
by the researchers during the project's development. Future researchers who will be performing
similar studies in the future were also given recommendations. Conclusions The required
observations and trials had previously been completed. Enough data had already been collected.
It is now able to respond to the problem's statement.

1. What are the negative impacts of social media to the academic performance of today's
students?

According to the research conducted, social media has become very affected since the
pandemic started. Since classes were conducted through social media platforms, there were a lot
of possible reasons for the students to waste their time on other social media platforms. During
online learning, most of them are using other platforms. Usually they're watching YouTube
videos, playing online games, or having chitchat with their friends. And it's caused them to
become procrastinators when doing their tasks, addicted, unable to focus on their studies, and
distracted, and it's led them to have poor academic performance.

2. What are the possible effects on the students'academic performance if the negative impacts of
social media continue?

Since the beginning of online learning, many have found it difficult to catch up due to the
new normal mode of learning. However, according to the study, most of them are spending their
time on social media rather than studying. If all the negative impacts of social media continue,
they are being pulled to become lazy. There's a possible reason for the students' failing grades.
Having a failed grade can sometimes lead to depression. If the aforementioned negative effects
of social media have an impact on students' academic performance, they may develop unstable
mental health in addition to failing grades.

3. How does social media affects students behavior?

3.1 Good

According to the ICT respondents, social media affects their behavior in a good way
because they're able to have internet friends. When they're having a problem, usually about
something they cannot tell their family members, they end up talking with their friends through
social media. Opening up their problems to someone can give them relief. While others are
spending their time watching or gaming to get rid of the sadness they're feeling. For some of
them, social media is not only about giving bad things but also temporarily escaping from the
world they're living in.

3.2 Bad

As stated by the respondents, their behavior becomes affected without even noticing it.
They also stated that they're developing bad behavior because of too much time spent on social
media, to the point that they're adopting the wrong things they saw on those platforms. As they
become addicted to social media, saying bad words has become part of their daily lives. People
worldwide are using social media, so anyone who's using social media can't avoid toxic people.
The reason they're also becoming one of them without them realizing it. Easily getting angry is
one of the behaviors that all of them listed when they're using their phones, scrolling on their
different platforms, and when someone asked them, they immediately shouted it because of
irritation.

4. Does social media affects to the students mental health using social media during online
learnings?

Due to excessive time spent on social media, students are prone to having unstable
mental health. According to the study, students are at risk of having anxiety and depression
because of their nature as explorers. Even during online classes or modular mode, they can't stop
themselves from focusing only on their studies during online meetings. They're still using
different platforms rather than listening. Because of the negative impacts of social media on
students, developing anxiety is also increasing. Most of them are attacking suicidal thoughts that
led them to self-harm. The stress from school work can be triggered by social media. To the
point that students are attacked by too much sadness, they sometimes end up killing themselves
because of too much stress.

CONCLUSION
Almost 3 years ago, coronavirus became a pandemic, leading to a new normal mode of
living. Since the virus spread, the education sector has become one of the most affected. Classes
remain online, but students must deal with all the possible negative effects of social media in
order to continue their studies. According to a study conducted, almost 90% of all students are
affected because of social media. According to a study of grade 11 ICT students at the South
East Asia Institute of Trade and Technology, social media is one of the top ten reasons for their
poor academic performance. Though social media is one of the most helpful devices to catch up
with their studies, it is also the same reason for them to develop different behaviors and unstable
mental health, and it has a big impact on their lives as students.

Throughout the study, out of 15 respondents using social media, 73.3% of them confirm
that social media has a big impact on their academic performance and highly affects their good
behaviors. Almost half of the respondents spent their whole day using social media rather than
studying and aiming to have an excellent academic performance. Having friends and tools to get
rid of sadness are the positive effects of social media for them, but being lazy, unable to focus on
their studies, procrastinating to do their tasks, distraction, and even addiction are the negative
effects of it. To continue their studies since the pandemic started, but teachers or even education
coordinators can't confirm that students are truly learning because the studies prove that 53.7%
of them are using other platforms instead of focusing on the discussion. Researchers confirm that
almost 90% of students' academic performance was affected due to too much social media use.

After all, to review the study, social media is becoming more and more dangerous with
each passing year. If the negative effects of social media on the lives of grade 11 ICT students
continue for the next 3–10 years, there's a big possibility that the academic performance of the
mentioned students will continuously increase. All the data shows that the grade 11 ICT students
from SEA-ITT are part of the millions of students that are struggling to maintain the excellent
academic performance they had because social media is continuously affecting each of them.
The good effects of social media on their studies can't compare to the negative impacts of it. Just
like the quote from Bill Nye “The information you get from social media is not substitute for
academic discipline at all”.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The following recommendation are hereby presented for the future researchers that will conduct
the same research study about the topic.

1. This tool is highly recommended to future researchers for paraphrasing tools. It'll help you
rewrite and enhance any sentence, paragraph, or article using state-of-the-art. Quillbot, Inc. is
also a tool for your better grammar. It'll help you avoid grammatically incorrect sentences.
Quillbot is cheaper than Grammarly Premium, but millions of students, teachers, and
professionals are trusting this tool.

2. The Prepost plagiarism checker is an online tool to check your papers. This plagiarism checker
tool helps you avoid accidental plagiarism. It scans your work against a database and is able to
detect plagiarism in both exact copies and in highly-edited plagiarized texts, which typically
mislead checkers. Unlike the plagiarism checker on Quillbot, here you don't have to update it to
premium to check your paper, you can use it free.

3. These sites are recommended to future researchers. This will give a lot of information about
the topic you're researching. Google Scholar and Sci-hub are free sites that you can access. These
sites are homes to articles, here you can find whatever article you need to.

4. For the future researchers, always make sure that you're walking on the right path where your
goals are to unveil the truth and discover the lies. Integrity and legitimacy are must. Your
research aims will be your guide to a better study.
