Introduction

Association of Social Media Addiction and Sleep

Deprivation to Academic Performance of SoC Students
The use of advanced technology is very important to every person in this
generation, especially the use of the internet. Internet connection became part of
every person living in this generation. This helps to increase efficiency to
communicate long distance, and to search for information by using gadgets and the
internet. Additionally, the internet has a lot of access to everything, especially to
different entertainment platforms such as social media, video streaming sites and

Introduction online video games.

Students rely on gadgets and the internet for their school work nowadays.
Also, the internet is important to college students because this is where college
students find their lessons and seek guidance on different study related platforms.
Some college students watch tutorials related to their needs in studying.
Additionally, college students use their gadgets and internet for entertainment
purposely also. Also, most students use social media for pastime. Some students
also use too much time on social media even if it is already a past night.
Background of the Study

Social media became a huge issue in our country. It has some good uses and
advantages but these also comes with disadvantages such as being addicted to it and
having less sleep as a result.

As stated by Kalpidou, et al., (2011), As to the relationship between social media

and grades, a study released by Ohio State University reveals that college students
who utilize Facebook spend less time on studying and have lower grades than
students who do not use the popular social networking sites

This study aims to determine if there is a significant difference between the

students who uses less social media and has enough sleep to those who are addicted
to it and are sleep deprived in terms of their academic performance.
Significance of the Study

The findings of the study may provide a deeper understanding on the effects of
social media addiction that usually leads to lack of sleep to the students academic
behavior and performance. With the result of the study, the researchers can spread
awareness about the advantages and disadvantages of it.

● To parents, with the result of the said study, they can guide their child and talk
about the limits on using social media and sleeping time.
● To students, the study will benefit the students because they now can be aware
of what they are doing and they can improve themselves depending on the
result of the study.
● To teachers, with the result of the study, the teachers can keep track on their
students performance and talk about what they can do to improve their grades
and behaviors.
Research Questions

Statement of the Problem Hypothesis

● Is there a significant difference between the students Ho : There is no significant difference between SoC
who are sleep deprived and those who have enough students who are sleep deprived and addicted to social media
sleep in terms of their academic performance? than those who have enough sleep and are not addicted to
social media in terms of their academic performance.
● How does social media addiction affect the sleep
deprivation of SoC students? Ha: The academic performances of SoC students are
affected with their sleep deprivation and social media addiction.
● Does social media and sleep deprivation affect the
academic performances of SoC students?
Conceptual Framework
Research Design

Quantitative research uses sampling methodologies and transmits out online surveys, polls,
questionnaires, and other forms of data collecting to acquire information from present and
potential customers. The researchers employed quantitative research design, which is defined as a
systematic investigation of occurrences using measurable data and statistical, mathematical, or
computational tools. Inferential statistics such as the t-test and descriptive statistics for the
weighted mean and percentage will also be used in the study.
Participants/Sampling Method

The Participant of the study are the college students at the School of Computing of Holy Angel University
with a total population of 916 students, and the sample size is 271 with a margin of error of 5% and a
confidence level of 95%. The sampling procedures used was a combination of simple random sampling and
convenience sampling, these sampling techniques will tackle respondents randomly and for those who wanted
to take the survey with the department, the respondents will be prompt to answer the survey in which pertains
how and why their academic performance may be affected with their social media addiction and sleep
deprivation.
Research
Instrument
To collect data, the researcher used a survey
questionnaire. A questionnaire is a sort of
research tool that consists of a series of
questions or prompts that are used to collect
data from a respondent. The Likert Scale was
used to have respondents respond on a scale, to
have their answers correlate on a specific level,
and to see how their experiences affect their
academic performance or how their experiences
transpired.
Data Gathering Procedure

Interaction with respondents is confined to online contact in

the current state of the country. The survey will be conducted
online, with no physical interaction, to maintain social
isolation and minimize outside interaction. The survey will
only circulate in the School of Computing, whereas SoC
students are at large. The questionnaire will be engaged with
SoC Students only adhering to the topic of the study.
Upon the inferential and descriptive statistics, the test statistics that
the researcher will use is the t-test, upon the research problems of
Data Analysis the study the t-test will determine whether the research problems
have significant affects or association of a SoC students’ academic
performance, specifically in their experience of sleep deprivation
and social media addiction, also the researcher will have to sought
out the weighted mean and frequency of the respondents in which
will determine the percentage of the relations of the variables in
connection with the statement of the problems or Research
Questions.
Ethical Consideration

All information shall be treated with utmost confidentiality. Reporting of the results will be done collectively. The
data shall be stored in a password encrypted computer and printed files will be kept in a locked cabinet for 3 months
before deletion and shredding. Information from this research will be used for the purpose of this research,
publication, and possible secondary analysis within the above-mentioned period. participation in this study is
voluntary. This means that answering the questions is out of the respondents’ free will. The respondents will
answer the online survey as honestly, accurately, and completely as they can for the research to serve its purpose. The
respondents can also withdraw anytime from the study even though they have already given their consent during the
first part of the survey.
