INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Radio waves are not the only reason for such symptoms it is the sad reality, that
nowadays many people especially youth, experience lack of human contact, and they
try to intercourse. Adolescence is not an easy period of life and that time a young
person is vulnerable. Excessive uses of smart phones can disrupt your sleep, which can
have a serious impact on your overall mental health it can damage your memory, affect
your ability to think clearly and reduce your cognitive and learning skills. Smartphone’s
can be a healthy productive tool; compulsive use of smart phones can interfere with
work, school and relationships. When you spend more time on social media or playing
games than interacting with real people or you can’t stop yourself from repeatedly
checking texts, emails, or apps, even when it has negative effect in your life, this is the
time to compromise the use of technology. Addiction sometimes known as
‘’homophobia’’ fear of being without a mobile phone, it is often fuelled by an internet
oversize problem or internet addiction disorder. After all, it is the phrase itself that
creates the compulsions; hot rather games, apps and online games that connect to us.
Smartphones addictions can encompass variety to control problems including virtual
relationships, addiction to social media, dating apps, texting and messaging sometimes
online friends become more important than real life relationship. Information overload,
compulsive web surfing, watching videos, playing games or checking newsfeeds can
lead to lower productivity at work or school to isolate you from people that surrounds
you. Smartphones are being used everywhere because these materials use the
physical cable/wire that is demanded for the communication purposes. Their demand
for the electromagnetic radiation for receiving and transferring the data in the air either it
is a network or sound or a sound data mobile phone have been good personally and
mobile phones have positively impact to education and the economy. Mobile phones
help the people to stay in touch with faraway friends and family and keep them enforced
of the latest news and information. At the same time, people’s positive attitudes are
paired with concerns about the impact on children. In today’s fast moving and globalized
world it is impossible to manage our day to day living without mobile phones. It may
cause headaches, decreased attention, shortness of temper, sleep disorders and
depression mostly among teenagers.

REVIEW LITERATURE

2.1 Related Review Literature

According to Golberg, 1996, Young 1998, smartphone addiction considered to root in

Internet addiction due to similarity of the symptoms and negative effects on users.
Internet addiction defined as an impulse control disorder. Characterized by pathological
internet use. Smartphone addiction could categorize as a behavioural addiction such an
internet addiction. Behavioural and chemical addiction have seven core symptoms in
common, that is salience, tolerance, mood modification, conflict withdrawal, problems
and relapse, these common points are not integrally researched, but each symptoms
has been found in smartphone addiction studies.

According to Wargo, (2012), the students checked their phones 34 times a day. People
may check their phones out of habit or compulsion, but habitually checking can be a
way to avoid interacting people. Some people can experience withdrawal symptoms
typically associated with substance abuse, such as anxiety, insomnia and depression,
when they are without their phones and all these are embedded to the course of
academic relapse of students who fall into this category. These addictions take strong
toll on the students without them noticing it and some of them find it hard to believe that
they are addicted to their phones. Thus, giving more credence to the amount of time
meted out to these phones than academics.

According to Choliz, (2010) pointed out that excessive use of and dependency on
the smartphones may be considered on addictive disorder. Theory on adolescent
egocentrism pointed out heighted self – consciousness during adolescence.
Adolescents are highly critical of authority figures, unwilling to accept criticism and quick
to find fault with others. Most students like to keep track ahead of their pears or to have
an ontological balance in their peer group which they find themselves. At the expense of
their notions, they try to live the life which is expected of them in the social settings
which they find themselves instead of the ideal life by pushing them to the limit

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

3.1 Research Design

Quantitative design will be used in this study because as the researcher conducted the
survey regarding the impact of excessive use of smartphone, the researcher will be
used a questionnaire test instead of essays which are a great example of quantitative
design because it puts a lot of series of interview in which people see it more hustle to
answer quantitative research usually has more respondents than qualitative research. In
this study, the researcher used numbers that applied statistical analysis in order to
validate the hypothesis. Quantitative made this research study less to do because the
ideas gathered in the survey for the hypothesis is proven through quantitative design.
This design also helps to get the numbers to prove the general points of the research
through this design it emphasized objective measurements and numerical analysis of
data gathering numerical data and generalizing it across group of people.
This study used quantitative design using quasi – experimental approach. The study
started by looking the impact of excessive uses of smartphones to the students through
the instruments that were used, the researchers are going to find out on validity of the
previous researches. The researchers see this study as quasi – experimental it involves
the cause and effect relationships.

3.2 Context and Participants

The researchers conducted the study in Northeastern Cebu Colleges on November
18,2019 to January 2020. The participants were limited in this study which is a total of
50 respondents, the range of the participants is in between 17 to 19 years of age, 25
females and 25 males students from Senior High School students in Northeastern Cebu
Colleges Inc. will be the respondents in this study.

3.3 Instruments
The tool to be used in this study is test questionnaire:
Test questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions for the
purpose of gathering information from respondents. Test questionnaire are often
designed for statistical analysis of the respondents. Test questionnaires have
advantages over some other types of surveys. This type of research instrument do not
require as much effort from the questionnaire. Test questionnaires are also sharply
limited by the fact that respondent must be able to read questions and respond to them.
3.4 Data Gathering Procedure
In test questionnaire, first the researchers have to collect questions regarding the
topic which is Impact of Excessive Uses of Smartphones to the Senior High School
Students. Second step is identifying the general question and specific questions. Next is
finalizing the questions then conduct the survey to at least 50 respondents, specifically
students. After conducting, analyzation of data will be done.

3.5 Data Analysis

In this context analysis the researchers were able to use as a test questionnaire to
gather information from the 50 respondents. The researchers prepared a guide
questions to get the information about the impact of excessive uses of smartphones.
This analysis where the researchers interpret the data by group or individually it shows
the different insight of students regarding the issue, it also helps in the data collected to
be reduced and simplified at the same time producing the result that the researchers
may measures using the Quantitative Research Design.
