Portfolio #7 Apartment Furniture Arrangement

You will develop personal skills by applying knowledge in multiple course assignments; you will
create an electronic portfolio that visually expresses your journey of application.

1. Weebly setup

• SCAN and UPLOAD your completed floor plan as a .jpeg
• LABEL floor/furniture plan BELOW the plan “Apartment Furniture Plan”

2. Review Furniture Arrangement Principles


• Evaluate ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES.
• GROUP furniture & furnishings.
• Allow NO TRAFFIC to interrupt the groupings
• Pay particular attention to appropriate CIRCULATION and CLEARANCE!
• BALANCE wall spaces (wall corners are generally not as significant).
• Be attentive to the principle of ALIGNMENT!

3. Floor Plan
Download and use the “Apartment Furniture Plan” to complete this assignment.

4. Furniture & Furnishings Requirements


The furniture/furnishings requirements are as follows:
• LIVING/DINING ROOM Floor Plan
o Seating for FOUR in the living area
o Seating for TWO in the dining/kitchen area
• BEDROOM Floor Plan
o Twin bed
o Night table(s)
o Chest of drawers
o Reading chair
• ADD ADDITIONAL furniture selections and furnishings (i.e. rugs, plants, portable lights,
art, etc.) to support your furniture arrangements.
• Use the furniture templates provided in class or draw your own furniture TO SCALE right
on the floor plan you have downloaded and printed.

5. Publish
Publish your website to UPDATE the published view BEFORE submitting!

Checklist

Circulation: (pp. 207-208)


 Is there a 36” major traffic path through rooms?
 Are traffic lanes left free (no obstructions/barriers)?
 Is there NO traffic through furniture groupings?

Clearance: (pp. 208-209)


 Is there a 36” clearance at doorways?
 Is there a minimum 36” clearance from the dining table
edge, desk, or piano for chairs, benches, and users?
 Is there 36” clearance in front of seating pieces to accommodate leg extension?
 Is there 36” clearance between beds and dresser/chest of drawers?
 Is there 30”-36” clearance between beds?
 Is there 24” clearance between beds and walls?
 Is there a minimum 24” for width for each seated diner?
 Is there a minimum 18” clearance between the front edge of sofas and chairs and the
coffee table?

 Is the main conversation grouping placed within an
8’-10’ area for 6-8 people?
 Is the basic seating arrangement(s) appropriate for the function(s)?

 Do the furniture groupings enhance the architectural features?
 Is there one well-chosen center of interest that is made the primary emphasis in the
room?
 Are the furniture groupings visually balanced? Are the wall spaces visually balanced?
Is the room visually balanced?
 Is the furniture arranged with sensitivity to the negative space?
 Is the scale of furniture and furnishings appropriate/functional?
 Are the lines created by furniture placement on the plan in harmony?

Function:
 Does seating allow for NO “knee-knocking”?
 Does reclining seating fully open?
 Does all furniture with drawers and/or doors fully open?
 Are all areas of activity supported with necessary items (no LONELY pieces)?

Drawing Details:
 Is furniture placed out from the wall 1”-2” unless it is built-in?
 Are all furniture items clearly detailed (identifiable) or labeled (ONLY as needed)?
 Are the backs and arms on sofas and chairs detailed?
 Are furnishings clearly detailed (lamps, rugs, plants, artwork, etc.)?
 Do side tables NOT extend beyond the front edge of sofas or chairs?
