Scaling of Earthquake records

1- Start ETABS model with only a cantilever as shown in fig. below.

2- Define the time history function

1- In ETABS, Define – Functions – Time History. Then the following window will appear.
2- Change the type of function to add to from file then Click on Add New Function.

3- Select the file from computer. Then click on view file to see its formatting
4- From the file note that:
4.1. number of lines to skip are 4
4.2. number of points per line are 5
4.3. interval are .01 “ in the 4th line it’s mentions that DT = .0100 SEC”

Then change these data in the time history window

Now, you have your time history defined, click ok

5- Convert the time history to response spectrum

6- The following window will open

7- Determine your level of damping then delete the other values. For example, I selected zero
damping

8- Then press on file – print data to file

9- Save the file and open it.

10- The first column is the building time period and the second is the spectral acceleration in g units.
Make interpolation to get the spectral acceleration at your building first time period.

11- Make a table of your time history record.

12- You will then have the following table
13- Convert the table to excel and delete the highlighted columns

14- Divide the values by the factor resulted from interpolation to have a record with a scale of 1g.
then to scale to any other factor multiply the scale of 1g by this factor
15- Now you have the records ready for analysis
