Your job is to make connections between the selection and your life and other texts.
Make point form notes to explain as many connections as you want, but then choose the
best or your favourite TWO connections to write a short paragraph about. In proper
paragraph form explain what the connection is and then comment on how the connection
helped change your understanding of the story/characters/themes etc.. The types of
connections you can make are:

1) Text to Self You can connect the selection to: your own experiences, happenings at school,
family or friends that have had similar experiences.

2) Text to Text You can connect the selection to: other books, newspapers, magazines, movies,
novels, video games etc

Melo and Jus divorce again.

Babe Ruth giving advice to Benny in Sandlot

Two people(Trey and Jared) one always “discouraging and bringing people down” and
the other “keeping people down. → Shared emotions between Jus and myself.

Page 80-81

Jus gets drunk and gets into a fight with people at Manny’s friend Blake's birthday party.

Jus is uncertain about SJ and his debate topic at first, but understands the long term
importance and sticks to the idea. Jus and SJ win first prize for the state championships
for debate. → I often self doubt myself on whether I am good enough for something or if
I will embarrass myself in front of an audience.
Both connections that I have today to share are both Text to Self connections. My first

connection is related to page 66 of the book. “It’s like I’m trying to climb a mountain, but

I’ve got one fool trying to shove me down so I won’t be on his level, and another fool

tugging at my leg, trying to pull me to the ground he refuses to leave” (Stone 66). I feel

like Jus’ emotions connect perfectly with me sometimes. I feel like sometimes there are

always people trying to drag me down in some way because I’m slightly superior to

them at some point and there are always types of people that will always push me down

too. I feel like this really helped me understand the emotions of Justyce and maybe why

he fought Jared so hard at Blake’s birthday party. My second connection revolves

around Jus being uncertain about SJ and his debate topic at first, but understands the

long term importance and sticks to the idea. Jus and SJ win first prize for the state

championships for debate. I often self doubt myself on whether I am good enough for

something or if I will embarrass myself in front of an audience. I feel like this connected

me further with Justyce because I was able to better understand his character, why he

might do certain things and his reasoning. For example, like not speaking up very often

because it might give him flashbacks or he might be self-doubting whether or not it is

right to do so.
