Experiment #04 PRC-1

TO DETERMINE THE AGGREGATE IMPACT VALUES OF COARSE

AGGREGATE SAMPLES

1.1 Introduction
Concrete is a composite material having aggregate, sand and cement. The strength of
concrete is much more dependent on the strength of aggregate. Sand is used as the filler material
and cement is used as binding material of aggregate. So the identification the good aggregate is
vital for concrete strength. Impact value of aggregate tells us that how much strength can be
achieved by using the same aggregate.
1.2 Purpose
To determine Impact value of coarse aggregate to achieve required strength of concrete.
1.3 Apparatus
 Weighing balance
 No.7 sieve (British standard)
 Impact Testing Machine
 Tamping Rod
 Cylindrical Cup
1.4 Materials Required
 Coarse Aggregate

Experiment #04 PRC-1

1.6 Procedure
We took a sample a of coarse aggregate passing through 1/2" sieve and retaining
on sieve 3/8". First of all we filled the cylindrical cup with aggregate in three layer. Each layer
was given 25 blows of temping rod in such a way that the aggregate would not fly off and the
surplus aggregates was removes. The cylindrical cup, filled with aggregate, was weighted. Then
the aggregates were placed into the cup of machine. The sample was given 15 blows of at the
height of 15". After compacting the cup was removed carefully and it was sieved through no.7
sieve for one minute. We measured the weight of passing and retaining material with the help of
weighing balance and rest of calculation was done.
1.7 Precautions
 No material should fly off during tamping
 The aggregate should be carefully place in compacting machine.

1.8 Results
The Aggregate Impact Value of given aggregate is 10.8 for 1st trial and for 2nd trial
the AIV is 9.1.
1.9 Comments
 1g difference in 2nd trial before and after sieving is due to losses
 Lower AIV value, better the sample is
