Experiment #08 PRC-1

To Find the Standard Slump Value of Concrete

Introduction
"Slump test is an indirect method to determine the workability of concrete." The
workability of concrete is affected by the amount of water in the mix. Too much water can
make concrete weak. Not enough water can make concrete less workable and may effect
hydration process. The slump height tells us the workability of concrete. Slump value is the
change in height of concrete before and after lifting the mold. A slump test is carried out on
site before the concrete is poured in place. The apparatus used in this test is simple so it can
be easily used at site.
Explanation
Test can give three types of the results:
True Slump Shear Slump Collapse Slump

Standard
ASTM C-143/C-143 M-15a
Apparatus
 Slump cone and tamping rode
 Metallic base plate
 Trowel
 Measuring Rode
 Base Plate
Materials
 Concrete

Procedure
Experiment #08 PRC-1

The slump cone was placed on the base plate which was smooth and clean. Concrete
was poured into the slump cone with the help of trowel. After filling one third of the slump
cone, rodding was done with the help of temping rode. For rodding, 25 blows of the temping
rode were applied in such a way that approximately 1" of the rode penetrated. Similarly, after
two third and complete filling same rodding was done and extra concrete was added to fill
completely. The extra concrete above the slump cone was removed and levelled with the help
of temping rode. After filling, the mold was lifted up gently so that the concrete under the
mold may not be disturbed. Slump value of the concrete was measured with the help of ruler
from thee different sides quickly. The type of the slump also observed which was true slump
in our case. The apparatus was cleaned for using next time.
Observations and Calculations
1st Reading = 2.6" = 66.04 mm
2nd Reading = 3.2" = 81.21 mm
3rd Reading = 3.0" = 76.2 mm
66.04+81.21+76.2
Slump Value =
3
= 74.48 mm
Results
True Slump was observed with the slump value of 74.48 mm.
Comments
The base plate was not properly cleaned.
