Determination of the Aggregate Impact Value of Different Coarse

Aggregate Samples
(BS 812)

Importance:
 The aggregate impact value gives a relative measure of the toughness or the resistance
of aggregate under sudden shock or impact.
 AIV is the percentage of fines produced from the aggregate sample after subjecting it
to a standard amount of impact.
 The standard amount of impact is produced by a known weight, i.e. a steel cylinder
falling a set height, a prescribed number of times, onto an amount of aggregate of
standard size and weight retained in a mould.
 Aggregate Impact Values, (AIV’s), below 10 are regarded as strong, and AIV’s above
35 would normally be regarded as too weak for use in road surfaces.
Required Material and Apparatus:
 Aggregate Sample
 Set of Sieves
 Measuring Balance
 Impact Testing Machine (Wt. of hammer = 13.5 – 14 kg , Height of Fall=380±5mm)
Procedure:
 First of all, take the sample passing Sieve ½ inch and retained on Sieve 3/8 inch. Dry
this sample for 4 hours in oven at 100 – 110 °C.
 Put this sample into the mould and tamp each layer for 25 times.
 Weight the sample and take it as W1.
 Now fix the mould on the base of machine and let the hammer fall freely on the sample.
The number of free falls of hammer shall be limited to total of 15 blows.
 Pass the impacted sample through sieve of 2.36mm and weigh the fraction passed
through 2.36 mm sieve. Record this value as W2.
 Calculate the value of Aggregate Impact Value = (W2/W1)*100
Observations and Calculations:
Mould Diameter = 4 inches
Depth of Mould = 2.5 inches
Weight of Hammer = 14 kg
Drop of Hammer = 15 inches
