Society is based on rules and laws. It could not function if individuals were free to do whatever they
wanted. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Laws have existed since the earliest civilizations, and a society could not survive without any code of
conduct. Some people believe that individuals’ freedom should be subject to laws and orders, otherwise
society cannot operate. I agree with this point of view.

Opponents may argue that some laws are obsolete and against the individual autonomy of the general
public. However, rules are created and reviewed to match the status quo, so citizens have the right to
voice their opinion should they find any legislation that needs rectifying. Being built on agreements that
people in a society mostly concur, therefore, laws help to protect law-abiding individuals and maintain
order in a society. Without the police force or army to constrain them from abusing their rights, people
could act as they please, robbing and killing each other, leading to social turbulence. Countries could
even engage in war with each other. A system of code of conduct ensure that criminals are punished for
their wrong-doing, and this in turn discourages other people from committing similar offenses. In
addition, laws provide a framework for dispute resolution. Personal values and beliefs vary between
individuals, and conflicts are inevitable. The legal system enables them to settle these disagreements in
court where a judge determines the outcome following a set of standards.

Moreover, laws make sure that the society functions smoothly and progresses in the right direction. In
terms of economic development, legal policies help to ensure that markets can operate effectively.
Individuals and firms owning properties are protected, and they are able to enter into agreements with
other parties with lesser risk. An economy subject to the rule of law is more likely to witness growth as
compared to one in chaos. In addition, rules and regulations are also important in education. They make
sure that children have access to education opportunities and receive the knowledge and skills they
need for their adult lives regardless of race or economic background.

In conclusion, absolute freedom is not desirable, for it can throw a society into chaos. Objective rules
and regulations are necessary, for they help to maintain stability and foster the development of a
society.
