CDB 4323

1. A diesel fuel which is currently being used for a combustion process has been
identified to be very polluting. You have been assigned to evaluate other fuel
alternatives to address the problem.

a. Based on the composition of diesel fuel from literature, estimate the

maximum flame temperature of the current combustion process if
1 kmol/h diesel fuel is fed with stoichiometric amount of air at 25°C.
You may use the data for standard heat of combustion and mean heat
capacity from various resources. Predict the possible impacts of the
combustion products on the environmental pollution.
[15 marks]

b. Propose TWO (2) fuels that can replace the current diesel fuel. Justify
why the fuels are considered cleaner than diesel. Evaluate whether the
fuels can fulfill the requirement of the process heating that is currently
being met by the combustion of the diesel fuel. Assume that the stack
temperature is 180°C.

2. FIGURE Q2 shows a steam distribution network with two steam boilers B1 and
B2 that are operating at part-loads during normal process plant operation. The
plant also has a requirement for 15 MW of power.

FIGURE Q2

a. The plant owner has decided to increase the onsite power generation
due to the expensive electricity tariff. Discuss TWO (2) different types of
steam turbine that can be installed in the network. Evaluate the effects
of each installation towards the operating load of the boilers and steam
flows in the network, if it is desired to reduce half of the current power
import amount.
[30 marks]

b. Boiler B1 is approaching the end of its useful life and hence needs to be
replaced. Propose a new steam generating alternative that can cover
the steam supply from boiler B1 while simultaneously generate power.
Estimate the amount of power that can be generated from the new
equipment based on suitable operating conditions (temperature,
pressure, flow rate etc.).

3. Find a process flow diagram (PFD) for any type of process plant from
journal/book/report/website, etc. The process should consist of a minimum of
three coolers. Attach the PFD together with your final solution. Design the
cooling water network with minimum total cooling water flow rate for the plant.
