TUTORIAL-5 Design of load bearing masonry building

Q1. A small load-bearing single storey house is to be constructed. The overall dimensions
of building are 12.0m x 12.0m. At least four rooms and one Verandah are to be constructed.
Assume suitable plan and design the walls according IS requirements.

Q2. A small load-bearing single storey house is to be constructed. The overall dimensions
of building are 10.0m x 10.0m. At least four rooms and one Verandah are to be constructed.
Assume suitable plan and design the walls according IS requirements.

Q3. A load bearing brick masonry wall of a building is 20 cm thick, is laterally supported
by RCC slab at top and bottom, which are 12 m thick each and clear height between slab is
3.0 m. if the wall has an axial load of 71.5 kN/m at the base, inclusive of self-weight, what
should be the crushing strength of brick and grade of mortar for the wall. Wall is 4m long
between cross walls and bricks used are of modular size.
Assume that there are no openings in the wall within H/8 of its junction with cross walls
and there are no openings in cross walls within H/5 of their junction with the load bearing
wall under consideration. Assume that two ends of wall are discontinuous and joints are
not raked
Q4. Design an interior wall of two storied wall caring a concrete slab
with a story height of 3 m. The wall is stiffened by 100 mm thick
intersecting walls 3600 mm c/c. also, the wall has a door opening of size
900x2000 mm at a distance of 200 mm from one of the intersecting wall.
Assume loading as follow: Roof loading 15 kN/m and floor loading 12.5
kN/m.

Q5. Design an interior wall of a three storied building, the ceiling height of
each story being a 3 m. A wall is unstiffened and is 3.6 m long. Assume
loading as follows: from roof 12 kN/m and from floor 10 kN/m for each
floor.
