Utilitarianism and Virtue Ethics' Conceptions of the Good

The fundamental premise in virtue ethics theory is that a behavior is only correct if it

is what a moral individual might do in the same situation. According to "virtue ethics," there

are many values for which a person can aspire, such as perfection or commitment to the

greater good, and which enable individuals to fully cultivate their humanity. These values are

developed by careful consideration of what one can become as a human being. The

fundamental premise of utilitarianism theory, on the other hand, is that whether actions are

objectively correct or wrong is determined by their consequences. The only effects of actions

that are relevant are the positive and negative outcomes that they produce. Mill describes

utilitarianism as a philosophy founded on the idea that "acts are correct in proportion to the

extent to which they appear to achieve pleasure, and wrong concerning the extent to which

they tend to create the opposite of pleasure." Mill describes peace as the lack of suffering and

joy.

As an individual-centered rather than behavior-centered, virtue ethics focuses on the

goodness or moral intent of the person doing the activity rather than legal responsibilities,

rules, or the consequences of particular actions. A respectable citizen lives virtuously, that is,

one that possesses and practices virtues. Utilitarianism, on the other hand, asserts that the

objective of philosophy is to reinforce life by increasing the number of good things in the

world while lessening the number of bad things. The most reasonable choice, rendering to

utilitarianism, is the one that offers the largest amount of value to the betterment of society.

Utilitarianism, I think, contributes to a more rational result. This is because it is

focused on how we can judge a broad variety of topics that require people's decisions. Rules,

attitudes, behavioral characteristics, strategies, and moral codes are also aspects that can be

tested. It is also a kind of consequentialism since it is based around the notion that the effects

or outcomes of regulations, acts, rules, and other things decide if they are good or poor,

correct or wrong. In summary, irrespective of what has been evaluated, we should choose the

alternative that will result in greater overall outcomes. Virtue ethics philosophy, on the other

hand, is based solely on a person's character and does not need any further consideration.
