PROJECT
WIRELESS REMOTE CONTROLLED CAR WITH MANUAL BLUETOOTH OPERATED
HEADLIGHTS USING ARDUINO , ULTRA SONIC SENORS AND ARDUINO
BLUETOOTH CONTROLLER

1. Introduction

Remote Controlled Cars (or RC cars for short) are miniature model cars or trucks that can be
controlled from a distance using a specialized transmitter or remote. The term "R/C" has been
used to mean both "remote controlled" and "radio controlled", where "remote controlled"
includes vehicles that are controlled by radio, infrared or a physical wire connection (the latter is
now obsolete).
A remote control vehicle is defined as any vehicle that is tele-operated by a means that does not
restrict its motion with an origin external to the device. This is often a radio
control device, cable between control and vehicle, or an infrared controller.
In this project we will be making an remote controlled car that will be completely operated by
our mobile phone through a Bluetooth module by using an app named Arduino Bluetooth
Controller.
We will also be using relay which will also be connected to the Bluetooth module to switch on
an light that will help us see in the dark.
Also an Ultra Sonic Sensor is being used so that we can know about any obstacle that comes in
the path of the RC car and on an LCD Display Danger will be shown and a buzzer will ring
respectively.
2. CASE STUDY
2.1 ARDUINO
Arduino interface boards provide the engineers, artists, designers, hobbyists and anyone who
tinker with technology with a low-cost, easy-to-use technology to create their creative,
interactive objects, useful projects etc. A whole new breed of projects can now be built that can
be controlled from a computer.
Arduino is a open source electronics prototyping platform based on flexible, easy-to-use
hardware and software. It’s intended for artists, designers, hobbyists, and anyone interested in
creating interactive objects or environments. It’s an open-source physical computing platform
based on a microcontroller board, and a development environment for writing software for the
board.
In simple words, Arduino is a small microcontroller board with a USB plug to connect to your
computer and a number of connection sockets that can be wired up to external electronics, such
as motors, relays, light sensors, laser diodes, loudspeakers, microphones, etc. They can either be
powered through the USB connection from the computer or from a 9V battery. They can be
controlled from the computer or programmed by the computer and then disconnected and
allowed to work independently.
Anyone can buy this device through online auction site or search engine. Since the Arduino is an
open-source hardware designs and create their own clones of the Arduino and sell them, so the
market for the boards is competitive. An official Arduino costs about $30, and a clone often less
than $20.
The name “Arduino” is reserved by the original makers. However, clone Arduino designs often
have the letters “duino” on the end of their name, for example, Freeduino or DFRduino. The
software for programming your Arduino is easy to use and also freely available for Windows,
Mac, and LINUX computers at no cost.

2.2 ULTRA SONIC SENSOR

The HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor uses SONAR to determine the distance of an object just like the
bats do. It offers excellent non-contact range detection with high accuracy and stable readings in
an easy-to-use package from 2 cm to 400 cm or 1” to 13 feet.
The operation is not affected by sunlight or black material, although acoustically, soft materials
like cloth can be difficult to detect. It comes complete with ultrasonic transmitter and receiver
module.

2.3 RELAY

A relay is an electrically operated switch. Many relays use an electromagnet to mechanically

operate a switch, but other operating principles are also used, such as solid-state relays. Relays
are used where it is necessary to control a circuit by a separate low-power signal, or where
several circuits must be controlled by one signal. The first relays were used in long
distance telegraph circuits as amplifiers: they repeated the signal coming in from one circuit and
re-transmitted it on another circuit. Relays were used extensively in telephone exchanges and
early computers to perform logical operations.

Applications
Relays are used wherever it is necessary to control a high power or high voltage circuit with a
low power circuit.  The first application of relays was in long telegraph lines, where the weak
signal received at an intermediate station could control a contact, regenerating the signal for
further transmission. High-voltage or high-current devices can be controlled with small, low
voltage wiring and pilots switches. Low power devices such as microprocessors can drive relays
to control electrical loads beyond their direct drive capability. In an automobile, a starter relay
allows the high current of the cranking motor to be controlled with small wiring and contacts in
the ignition key.

2.4 BLUETOOTH

HC-05 module is an easy to use Bluetooth SPP (serial port protocol) module designed for
transparent wireless serial communication setup. Serial port Bluetooth module is fully qualified

2.5 ARDUINO BLUETOOTH CONTROL

Arduino Bluetooth Control is an application that allows you to control your arduino board (and
similar boards) via Bluetooth, and so to create awesome and fully customized projects, with the
new features available within the app.
The settings section allows you to adapt the application to your needs, through a very simple and
intuitive interface.
This application is available in the GOOGLE PLAY STORE and is very useful and makes it
easy for us to connect our Bluetooth module with it.

3. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Radio control cars are fun toys for children and have limited features in them which are easy to
be handled by the child unlike the hobby grade radio control car which has more features and it
is more expensive than the toy grade radio control car that is more suitable for adults. The toy
grade cars are more of a children’s grade toy and it is colorful and can be quite entertaining.

The toy radio control cars are generally less complicated and are designed with the kids in
mind.  So before you purchase a toy for your child bear in mind to buy a toy that is easy for
your toddler to handle.

Today the radio control cars have become the most sought after toy for children for various
reasons. Children gain confidence when playing with these toys as they can imagine that they
also can drive a car like his or her mother or father as children love to imitate what their
parents do.
The radio control car helps in overall development of a child in many ways. The flashing
lights and sounds can help to stimulate the senses. These toys are capable of providing many
hours of fun which helps the child to develop his or her reflexes, hand and eye co-ordination
and imagination.

Radio control cars make good Christmas or birthday gifts and are extremely fun.  You’re sure
that your child will love it.

Now we shall discuss a little about the hobby grade radio control car.  Hobby grade cars are
expensive, more than the toy grade control cars and you can install the conversion kits which
avails the vehicle to change radically.   Spares for the Hobby grade Radio control cars are
freely available unlike the toy grade radio control car. The growing demand for the ready to
run hobby cars has prompted the manufacturers to discontinue the production of toy radio
control cars.

Today, the manufacturers have come out with more advanced radio controlled cars such as
the Cyclone radio controlled cars. These Radio Control cars are available in different models
such as monster trucks, regular cars , racer types and SUV’s.   This type of radio controlled
cars are ideally suited for people who are into motor racing hobby since these  vehicles are
designed and manufactured with the idea of speed in mind and since  it has two speed
controls one high and one low speed options which makes it easy to  control this vehicle even
at high speed.

4. FUTURE SCOPE

The knowledge is ever expanding and so are the problems which mankind strives to solve. In this
spirit, it is hoped that the current activities will lead to further enhance. For example, work on
future for military purpose by the robot and remote controlled cars.
This project will not only help us but also help the upcoming engineers and other students to take
interest in such technologies.
Demand of such project and innovations are loved by all and helps keep us up with the latest
technologies and gives us path to lead our self towards a better future.
