Greetings!

I am assigned to discuss the first topic in chapter 8 “recruiting the project team members”.

So why do we need a good project team members?

Just like what is stated here in powepont presentation,

Project plan and their execution are only as successful, as the manager and team who implement them.

In order to have a successful project plan, we should first consider forming an effective project team.
As this team will be the one responsible in planning and implementing the projects.
When recruiting and building an effective team, you must consider not only the technical skills of each
person but also the critical roles and chemistry that must exist between the project manager and the
team members.

So how do we recruit a project team members?

First we will takle about the three separate components in choosing project team.

First the core team, second is the client team and lastly the contract team.

Take note that the project team can be completed without a contract team. This will be further
explained later on.

[NEXT SLIDE]

Lets go first identifying what is a core team.

Core team members are with the project from cradle to grave. They typically have a major role to play in
the project, example is professional staffs.

Core team member are considered as the main group of people that are accountable and have a shared
sense of responsibility for the market success of the project.

When to Select the Core Team Members

Members should be identified as early as possible because the core team will be needed for the Joint
Project Planning Session (JPPS),

The core team is usually identified at the beginning of the scoping phase.
This means that the members can participate in the early definition and planning of the project.
[NEXT SLIDE]
And here in selection criteria, we are going to consider the following characteristics that a project
team member must possess.

 The core team must be committed and be proactive in fulfilling their responsibilities and not
need constant reminders. They must place a high priority on fulfilling his or her roles and
responsibilities in the project.
 The core team should also share equally in success and failure. Having shared responsibility
means that you will never hear one team member taking individual credit for a success , or
blaming another team member for a failure on the project.
 Team members must be flexible and willing to adapt the situation.
 Team members should also be task oriented. they should get their assigned work done
according to the project plan that counts.
 Team members should also possess the Ability to work within schedules and constraints.
 They must also be trusting and trustworthy.
 And being team-oriented means to put the welfare of the team ahead of their own.
 team member should be open-minded, they should welcome and encourage other points of
view and other solutions to problem situations.
 Core team should also possess Ability to work across structure and authorities, and the Ability to
use project management tools.

[NEXT SLIDE]
And now lets move on to the next component of project team.

The client team member,

Take note that we don’t have any choice about who are the clients assigned to our team. Example of
this member is your manager or supervisor.
Client team member play an active role in approving project plans, requesting changes, raising issues
and risks, approving milestones, releasing payments, and accepting (or declining) the final deliverables
of the project.

These people need to be assigned in time to participate in the Project Kick-Off Meeting.
[NEXT SLIDE]
In selection criteria,
since we don’t have the opportunity to choose this client members, all we have to do is to profile the
skills and experiences of the client team members.
Perhaps specification by position title would be preferred by both the client and the project manager.
Also, a client members with some decision-making authority can make the project process fast.

[NEXT SLIDE]
Let’s now move on to the last component.

The contract team member,

So what are these members. Contract team members are available to work on the project for only short
periods of time.
As soon as the assigned task is completed, he or she leaves the project. This person is contracted from
the outside of the organization.

If the organization is lacking or in shortage of staff or skills required in the project, this is now the time
that the project manager will recruit a contract team member outside to join in project team.

As what I’ve said awhile ago, project team member can be complete without a contract team.

If the organization has enough people for a specific project then it would be good.

[NEXT SLIDE]
In selecting contract members, the following are the steps in order to engage into a service of a
contract team member.

1. Identify the types of skills and the number of personnel needed

2. Identify a list of client member that will be invited to submit a proposal.
3. Write the Request for Proposal
4. Establish the criteria for evaluating responses
5. Distribute the Request for Proposal
6. Evaluate the responses
7. Reduce the list of the contract member to a few, who will be invited onsite to make a formal
presentation.
So before I end my report, in summary, a success of a project will depend on what project team you
have.
When recruiting an effective team, you must consider not only the technical skills but also the critical
roles and chemistry of your team.
The core team is the important group of people responsible in the success of the project, a client team is
the one who evaluate the project, gives the accept or reject decision and the one who decides if the
project is successful,
lastly, a contract team member will only be required if there is a shortage of staff or skills required in
specific project.
