School Desegregation Timeline
A timeline is a visual representation of historical events that shows the order in which those events
occurred. Timelines allow us to understand history more broadly than usual: when we read a narrative
account of history, we’re only focused on the words in front of us. When you “read” a timeline, on the
other hand, you can see broadly how events relate to each other chronologically, which may help you
see other types of patterns and relationships among events.
Directions: Use the following steps to create a timeline that shows how the process of school
desegregation relates to other important events from American history.
1) Draw the timeline shown below on a larger piece of paper or poster board.
2) Place each of the following events at the appropriate place on the timeline:
• 1863 – Emancipation Proclamation Signed
• 1865 – Civil War Ends
• 1918 – World War I Ends
• 1945 – World War II Ends
• 1959 – Alaska and Hawaii Become States
• 1963 – Assassination of President John F. Kennedy
• 1969 – American Astronauts Land on the Moon
• 1989 – Berlin Wall Falls
• 2008 – Barack Obama: First African‐American President Elected
3) Go back through the lesson and write down important dates related to the Brown v. Board of
Education case and the process of desegregating schools, then mark those important dates on
the timeline too. 1969
