Control lever
To communicate with the display manually, the control
lever on the right hand side of the steering wheel is used.
The following commands are available:
1 “Esc” is used to return to the previous menu/character
and to discontinue a setting/operation.

2 “SELECT” confirms a selection or a character.

Speaker
The instrument contains a speaker that sounds to that
draw the attention of the driver to a fault message being
displayed or an abnormal test value. The speaker gives
the sound for the flashers, alarm clock, information and
warning.

Communication
Communication between the vehicle’s control units and
display is via the information link SAE J1708.

The systems control signals are sent via the control

link SAE J1939.

Information and diagnosis signals are sent via the

information link. Via the information link SAE J1708
the system’s status is kept continually updated and
available for reading via the diagnostics socket. For more
information see service information.

If any of the control units should detect an error, a

message will be sent to the instrument. The error can
then be read as an error code on the instrument display,
either as text or as a code.
The parking heater can be pre-programmed using the
instrument display. Direct start and temperature are set
using the switch and thermostat respectively.

Instrument, gauge
The following gauges are included in the instrument: • Charge pressure meter (INST-HIG only)

• Tachometer • Fuel level gauge

• Speedometer • Air pressure gauge, front brake circuit

• Coolant temperature gauge, engine • Air pressure gauge, rear brake circuit

• Engine oil pressure gauge Note: Only the air pressure gauges are mechanical.

Meters, function
Tachometer

The meter shows the engine speed and receives its signal
from the engine control unit.

Speedometer T3014318

The meter shows the vehicle’s speed and receives its

signal from the vehicle control unit.

T3014607
Volvo Truck Corporation Date Group No. Release Page
Service Bulletin 7.04 381 28 03 7(14)

Coolant temperature gauge, engine

The gauge indicates the temperature of the engine

cooling system. The temperature, under normal driving
conditions, must be below the red sector. The gauge
gives a reading when the ignition key is in the drive
position and the coolant temperature exceeds 60 C.

The light diode in the lower, right-hand corner lights up

when the engine control unit sends a signal that the
coolant temperature is too high, no matter what the value
is on the gauge. T3014319

Engine oil pressure gauge

The gauge shows the current oil pressure in the engine.

The pointer must not move down into the red sector while
driving! If the oil pressure disappears, e.g. due to oil
leakage, the engine could be seriously damaged. The
gauge gives a reading when the ignition key is in the drive
position.

The light diode in the lower left-hand corner lights up

when the engine control unit sends a signal that the oil
T3017585
pressure is too low, irrespective of the value of the meter.
Charge pressure meter (INST-HIG only)
The gauge measures overpressure in the intake manifold.
When driving with constant load, the pointer should be
stationary. The task of the charge pressure meter is,
apart from showing the pressure loading, to help the
driver to maintain even speed and constant acceleration,
together with the speedometer, to thereby reduce fuel
consumption. The meter receives its signal from the
engine control unit.
Fuel level gauge T3014322

The gauge shows the approximate amount of fuel in the

tank. The red sector and the yellow LED indicate that it
is time to refuel. The meter is directly connected to the
fuel level sensor, and is activated when the starter key is
in the driving position.

Air pressure gauge, front/rear brake circuit T3014321

The meters are directly connected to the vehicle’s air

pressure braking system and show the air pressure in the
front (1) and rear (2) brake circuits. The vehicle must not
be driven if pressure is less than 5.5 bars.

The light diode (symbol) in the lower left-hand corner

lights up when the air pressure in the brake circuit falls
below 5.2 ±0.3 bar.

Instrument, display
The display presents the driver with information. It is
controlled using the control lever on the right-hand side of
the steering wheel. The information is structured around
several main menus and sub-menus with accompanying
functions. Which menus are available varies depending
on whether the vehicle is being driven or is stationary.

Driving = speed above 3 km/h.

Stationary = speed under 3 km/h.

The display can show three types of message:

Information, Warning or Stop.

Messages shown while driving when immediate action

must be taken by the driver, will be displayed automatically
with an accompanying symbol. The white (information),
yellow (warning) or red (stop) lamp above the display will
come on at the same time.

When the red lamp is lit and the engine is running, an

alarm signal is also activated.

Several messages may be active at the same time. When

a new message is activated, the new one is shown
instead of the old one, provided that the new one has the
same priority or higher priority.

The layout of the display

The display window is divided into three sectors:
1 Menu. This is where the menus are displayed together
with alarms, warnings and information messages.

2 User. The left side displays the information that the

driver has selected to see using favourite display. In
the right-hand part, the clock is shown.

3 Status. Status symbols will be displayed on the left.

The odometer will be displayed on the right.

Note: The top row contains information on which main T3014605

menu and which sub-menu are active, and how many

sub-menus are available.
