Making Sentences 7.

The VERB has a tense. It tells you when the action

happens – in the past, present or future.

Examples:

PAST

♦ Laura was born in the 1990s.

This is in the past tense. It happened some time ago.

PRESENT

♦ Laura is a girl of eleven now.

This is in the present tense. It is happening now.

FUTURE

♦ Laura will be a teenager soon.

This is in the future tense. It will happen in the future.

Underline the verb in each of the following

sentences.
Say whether it is in the present tense, the past tense
or the future tense.

The first three have been done for you:

1. The man dug a hole.

Answer: dug is the verb. It is in the past tense.

2. I like spaghetti.

Answer: like is the verb. It is in the present tense.

3. I shall go to the Lucien Freud exhibition tomorrow.

Answer: shall go is the verb. It is in the future tense.

4. The exam will be on Tuesday.
