Case Study

Question no.1:
Describe what is meant by motivation. What types of non-financial
reward might a company use to motivate employees?
Answer:
Motivation is the inner force that helps a person complete his or her
assigned work. It is generated from within and the stimulus can be a
financial reward or even a non-financial one.
A company can provide many types of non-financial rewards to ensure that
its employees remain motivated.
1. It can be some sort of appreciation or an award like “Best employee
of the week”. A company can place a photo on its main wall so that
every customer and employee can see that who got this award. A
friendly competition between employees will encourage them to stay
motivated to receive this appreciation.
2. Make a wish policy. Rather than the company deciding itself,
employees can be given the right to select their reward too. A
company can offer the employees who work hard a wish which they
can make like a holiday or a small gift.
3. The company can provide its employees with free medical
assistance which would ease the expenditures of their health.

Question no.2:

Describe the effects of an unmotivated workforce on a company. How

does Tesco benefit from ensuring that its workforce is motivated?
Answer:
An unmotivated workforce generates an environment in which the staff is
not happy with their job. Mutual bonding between the employee and the
company is not developed. Moreover, the efficiency of the workers
decreases as there is no motivation to work resulting in a lesser production.

The measures are taken by TESCO for having a motivated staff benefit
them in a lot of ways. Firstly, the staff remains loyal to the company and
hence putting in more effort. The efficiency of the workers' increases
because they see their goals ahead which would be fulfilled if they work
wholeheartedly. More efficient staff saves the company from extra business
expenses. A healthy relationship is also maintained due to good
communication between the company and its employees which has a
positive impact on the production.

Question no.3:

Evaluate the two motivational theories in the study, demonstrating

how each relates to Tesco.

Answer:
The research by theorist Elton Mayo that motivation is not just due to one
factor but because of multiple reasons. Good communication and
teamwork, giving the decision power to others, providing work that is non-
repetitive and less boredom are all different factors which help in giving
motivation to the staff of a company. Tesco makes sure that these all
factors are present by having strong communication with its employees.
Every staff member is given a Personal Development Plan to help them in
growing as individuals and reach their goals. It also promotes motivation
through training.

Another theory about motivation is the “Two Factor Theory” by Herzberg.

He states that there are two sets of factors that are central to motivation.
Satisfiers, which include promotion and responsibility, and the other factors,
known as the Hygiene factors are composed of decent working conditions.
Tesco takes the study of this theory and puts it into action by providing
good working conditions and motivating its staff both financially and non-
financially. It provides Personal Development Plans for the personal growth
of the employees. Tesco also believes in having reviews by the staff of the
company’s measures and actions towards them so that the improvement
takes place every day. This leads to the betterment of both Tesco and its
employees.
